St. Josephs Center Reflection
This past Monday, October 24, 2016, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the St. Joseph Center. I had been the ST. Joseph’s Center three years ago as a freshman to do volunteer work. Unfortunately, I was unable to do much as a volunteer, and was not there for very long to really appreciate what the center had to offer. I was very excited to go back, and get a more hands on experience. When we first arrived, we were briefed on the history and set-up of the center, and about each of the residents we would be working with. I was amazed at how much the center has expanded over the years, and all the services that they provide. The center appeared to be very unique, and made me wonder why I had never heard of any other similar programs elsewhere. Growing up Staten Island of NYC, where some of the best medical services are available, I can confidently say there is so such service available on Staten Island. This really got me thinking, and made me realize how important St. Josephs Center is not just for Scranton, but how important and influential it can and should be for everyone. Next we were taking down to pick up the four residents we would be working with to do some …show more content…
He was very resistant at first, which I totally expected, but became more welcoming to my touch, and by the end he did not want to let my hand go. I was also able to help Chris walk in his walker. I had having trouble keeping up with him he moved so quickly! I could tell how much Chris enjoyed walked, and how upset he was when it was time to be put back in his chair. We got all the residents back in their chairs and ready to go back down to their Day program. What I enjoyed most able the visit is when as we were leaving, the staff had music playing and we were able to spin the residents in their chairs and do a little dance party, which they all seemed so happy

Adam Bradley, the executive director, is the only full-time staff at Luke’s House. All other physicians, interpreters, nurses, students, and staff are volunteers. A complication of this is that…

Throughout my life, I have dedicated myself to act selflessly and always attempt to best represent my community. The Larner COM commitment to service aligns with my philanthropic views of healthcare. In my experience volunteering at a local homeless clinic, we ask each patient: “If you could not have come here, where would you have gone?” Many patients’ answer is nowhere. The involvement that students maintain in the local Community Health Center of Burlington provides an opportunity to work with populations similar to those I have assist in Colorado.…

Last week in class we read the Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. The book showed what's it’s like to overcome adversity at anytime even when times are bad Jeannette Walls overcame her father's alcoholism and her mother's psychoness. The family was also going through a financial crisis so with the weight of everything on her she had to get over so much for her to be able to succeed in her later life. Jeanette was a very strong and determined person and she didn’t allow herself to use the homelessness or her father’s alcohol problems but more as opportunities. She felt as if the hardships were making her who she was and it allowed her to become such a strong and humble person. I have had much adversity but this was the hardest for me. A couple…

My goals for residency are simple – to continuously learn in order to educate and heal. Although I have been involved in the community in various ways for many years, I am truly excited to start giving back to society from a different perspective – that of a physician, of a person’s first stop in their most vulnerable of times. Family Medicine is a broad field that will challenge me in many ways, but I am ready to enhance my knowledge in a program that fosters learning through a supportive, team approach where patients and their futures are the greatest concerns.…

The community I grew up in deep in the heart of Austin, Texas celebrated my heritage, honored differences in culture, and fostered personal growth and self-discovery. My parents, with the strong work ethic they developed on their family’s farms in Ghana, encouraged my brother and me to work hard and find ways to use my skills to be of service to others. My experiences engaging with the communities that I have lived inspire me to become a physician dedicated to finding the most effective ways to communicate with my patients and improve their health outcomes in different types of environments. I first worked in health care locally during the summer after my sophomore year of college when I volunteered at the People’s Community Clinic. It was there that I got my first look at direct health interventions through making health education materials in the…

It is critical to understand the underserved communities challenges and barriers and other factors that contributed to their situation, family, social and culture. As a future APRN, I will have the advantage of knowing the inner workings of the family while treating patients and providing complete care because I can personally relate to the challenges that face many underserved communities. In addition, I have volunteer experiences working with several Emory University physicians at the Good Samaritan Health Center, Mercy Care and National AIDS Education and Services for Minorities (NAESM) all in Fulton County, Ga. That have furthered my passion for helping those less privileged like myself. Their stories reminds me of my story growing up in Africa, it inspires me to continue my volunteer service, to gain a deeper understanding of how to implement health care to underprivileged populations. My understanding of their needs and being an empathetic listener, I will be in a better position to provide my service as needed to the hurting community at large. I will be able to have a lasting impact on a diverse patient population; much like the nurses back in Africa has had on me growing up in Africa. I long to make a difference in access to healthcare for many disadvantaged populations with my Advance Practice certification. I hope to fulfill my calling of becoming an advance practice nurse that can affect disadvantaged communities and provide complete well-rounded heath care access; I am energetic and excited at the prospect of participating in Nurse Corps program, and welcome the opportunity enthusiastically. I consider it a privilege to give back and serve the underserved…

Spending time in clinicals with this woman in particular, helping her with her daily routine as well as getting to know her on a personal level developed a bond I will never forget. This woman, 96 years young, was full of wisdom and didn’t hesitate to share it all with me. Through this experience I learned what it meant to be a health care provider and truly care for the person I was helping, even when I had never met them before. I’ll never forget the last day of my clinical rotations as I stopped by for a final goodbye to each of the patients I had helped care for and their reactions. Everyone I had helped was more than grateful for my time spent with them, but Beatrice, my last stop before leaving Toledo hospital, broke into tears telling me how I was the hardest worker she had ever had and how much she would miss our time together. It was that moment that I realized this is want I needed to do with my life and that making a difference in someone’s life through healthcare would be the ultimate high.…
