Verse 1
A lady seems to think that anything can be bought with money and is trying to buy her passage to heaven. By thinking this, you can see that she has based her life on material things. She thinks that whatever she asks for will be received, like she is entitled to it. She does not give consideration or a single thought about what she is asking for. The lady may represent the soul of a naive person who believes that in the end she will reach heaven for simply being good and everything will work out.
Verse 2
The “sign on the wall” represents an authoritative figure telling the lady, and others, what to believe in, because not everyone is sure what to believe. The line “because you know sometimes words have two meanings”, means that there may be a hidden message in the sign. The lady wants to be sure that there are no hidden messages in the sign, so she looks deeper into its words. The songbird sings “sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven”. The songbird is stating that the lady’s entire perception of things such as the Stairway to Heaven may be wrong.
Verse 3
“There is a feeling I get when I look to the west and my spirit is crying for leaving” A new person is now proceeding down the same path as the Lady. When he looks back to where he came from, he gets a feeling of sadness, because he has left his past life to proceed down his desired path. “In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees.” The trees are a sprawling forest that represents the mind.
