Stand by Me (Movie Review for Small Group Com)
A Summer To Remember

The movie Stand By Me is based upon a novel by Steven King. It doesn't have the same eerie feel as some of his other books and is generally a more serious movie. It takes place in the small town of Castle Rock, Oregon. It is the middle of the summer in approximately the early 1960's. The kids are bored and that is the setup for their adventure to go find a dead body in the woods.

The main role of Gordie LaChance is played by Wil Wheaton. He is having trouble in his life at this time because he just lost his brother and his parents are having a very difficult time dealing with it. Chris Chambers was played by River Phoenix. Chris is considered a loser because of his family and everybody thinks he will do nothing in life. Through it all, the group of kids looks up to Chris and he is admired by them. The role of Teddy Duchamp is played by Corey Feldman. Teddy has a difficult time in life largely because his father was very mean to him before getting thrown in an insane asylum. The lack of discipline shows in that Teddy has a serious problem staying in control. He is always going crazy and his behavior presents a problem more than once to the group. Vern Tessio is played by Jerry O'Connel. He is the short little fat kid that remains a constant pest throughout the movie. Together the for kids embark on a trip through the woods that will be a challenging adventure for them all. Over the course of the movie the group has problems with individual group members, they have to work as a team, and leadership roles emerge.

In any group, dealing with difficult group members is vital to the group's success. Stand By Me has three different types of difficult group members that cause problems in their own way.

Vern is probably the most difficult member to deal with. He would be characterized as a blocker. He thwarts the progress of the group, opposes much of what the group attempts to accomplish (Rothwell 145). Throughout the movie

Τhe film I chose to critique this week is the classic family comedy Home Alone (1990) directed by Chris Columbus. Leading actors in this film is eight year old Kevin McCallister played by Macaulay Culkin, along with Peter McCallister, the father, played by John Heard, Mrs. McCallister played by Catherine O’Hara, Marv, who is the first burglar, played by Daniel Stern, and Harry, the other burglar played by Joe Pesci. Other characters in this film are Buzz the brother, mean Uncle Frank, and creepy old man Marley. The title of the film hints to the audience that someone is home alone, but the viewer does not know what happens in the story until watching the film, which makes it more interesting. This film is about a large family who gets together for a Christmas trip to Paris, but the night before they leave there is a wind storm, which knocks out all of the power, which means their alarm clock does not go off, and they sleep in. This puts them in a mad rush to get to the airport, in turn leaving Kevin behind, and the rest continue on to a fun family adventure.…

Although we have yet to learn about this specific time period, I could not resist the urge of writing a review about a timeless film that is centered on the one-hundredth years anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase. Meet Me in St. Louis take place in the year of 1903 in St. Louis, Missouri. The main historical significance was the World’s Fair that celebrated the Centennial of the Louisiana Purchase, a territory sold by France to the US in 1803 comprising of the western part of the Mississippi valley. The movie is overall extremely accurate. The actors in the movie acted very similar to the time period, from their dress to their manners. The movie mainly depicts the story of a family living in St. Louis who’s father attempts to move them to New York because of a job promotion and of his love for the city. The historical event of the World’s fair comes at the end of the movie when the family all dresses up in white and attend the fair. The only small mistake I saw was in the movie they showed many mountains and St. Louis is on a prairie with little mountains. Other than that it was very accurate.…

There was the actual group leader Andre, and then there was a woman, Christy, who helped him lead the group and keep everyone on task. She also was the groups contact person, and filled out all the forms for peoples parole officers, help house leaders, etc. Then there were 3 or 4, depending on the night, members who wanted to be in control of the group. Two of them were actually beneficial to the group and provided them with helpful stories and commentary. Then there were the other two who just seemed to want to interrupt the group just to share something they thought was important, but not something that helped the group or went along with the group discussion. I think this was very challenging to the group overall, there was a lot of whispering going on while these members talked, whispers of “someone shut him/her up” “I can’t stand it when he/she shares” etc. I think that the assigned leaders should step up and quiet them down or try and get them into some type of individual counseling. It is a tough situation though because if they are asked to leave the group or quit sharing it may lead to a relapse or them just not attending meetings anymore because they feel unwelcome, and that is not beneficial at all. You could see that the leaders were trying to keep things on track and had subtle ways of trying to quiet a person, but it didn’t always…

Craig seems like a sweet, young boy who, despite the adversities, does not hold any anger, or resentment for anyone. It shows there is still a lot of love in him to give. I feel like Vern is only getting meaner, and bossy when it comes to Craig, the book has not yet spoken of him doing the same with Hazel. It seems his attitude is only getting worse, never really taking any responsibility when it comes to Craig's actions. Such as the situation with the Lepers. He never acknowledged that he was the one who showed him the movie because he did like the movies that were more age appropriate for…

The main character is Graham Hess, a once former priest. He is the father and care giver for his kids but right now he is not mentally there for them. Graham recently lost his wife Collen. She was walking in the night when a driver fell asleep at the wheel and hit her. She unfortunately did not make it through the accident. With this tragedy taking a toll on Graham’s life, it is making him also question his beliefs. The two children are Morgan, the oldest son and Bo, the youngest daughter. Morgan’s character plays the role as the “adult” throughout this film. Morgan has bad asthma which leads to many difficulties he has to overcome in his life. He knows that his father is having a hard time coping with the loss of his mother so he then takes on the responsibilities that a father would have. Bo, on the other hand is a young girl that is not afraid of much and has shown her cleverness since the day she was born. Lastly, there is Uncle Merrill. He once was a professional baseball player that had hit the farthest ball in the minor leagues. When he knew his brother needed someone, he came to live with the family for…

Emotions often run high as arguments over important ideas, concepts, and solutions are explored. The individual members attempt to carve out their place and responsibilities during this stage and power struggles may develop. The group is beginning to develop clarity of purpose, but the leader needs to work toward keeping the groups attention on team goals rather than the distractions of various relationship issues.…

When it comes to roles, each person has a role in the group. If a person is not following through or does not feel comfortable in their role as a leader or doing a certain part in contributing, this can cause problems within the group. Every time there is a new group with different goals and people, there are different needs within the group. If it is in a work setting compared to a school setting, there are different needs that could be addressed.…

In today’s society, it’s known that Latinos have become the largest ethnic group in the state of California. Therefore, schools and communities are surrounded by Hispanics, Latinos and other race as well. In this film Stand and Deliver it shows a high population of Hispanic students from working-class families who are way below their grade level in terms of academic skills and have a lot of social problems. However, in this film we discover a variety of learning objectives that are established by the teacher. For example, we meet Jaime Escalante, who is a math teacher who teaches in a high school in a Hispanic neighborhood where he discovers the untapped potential of his students and sets a goal of having his class take the AP Calculus at the end of their senior year.…
