Intro

Starbuck’s was founded in 1971 by three men from Seattle, Washington. These three men were coffee fanatics that specialized in selling whole bean Arabica coffee beans in the world famous Pike’s place market. In 1982, Howard Schultz joined the. By the early 1990’s he had opened and operated over 150 stores in the Northwest United States and Chicago markets. Schultz decided to take the company public in 1993, by 2002, Starbucks had established Starbucks as the dominant specialty coffee brand and coffee house with over 5000 stores worldwide and 4500 of those are corporate locations.

Starbucks Mission Statement

The success of Starbucks in the early 1990’s can be attributed to Howard Schultz’s vision of the Starbucks brand. Schultz inspired of a company which would make the customer the centre of its success and would change the coffee drinking experience in the U.S. Starbucks was successful because it placed value to the customers first in its value proposition. As to Customer’s expectation in terms of Starbucks’ Beverage, we could refer to Starbucks’s Mission Statement under customer segment;
“When we are fully engaged, we connect with, laugh with, and uplift the lives of our customers – even if just for a few moments. Sure, it starts with the promise of a perfectly made beverage, but our work goes far beyond that. It’s really about human connection.”

Generally speaking, we categorize Starbucks’ Customer experience into 3 P’s:
People - the baristas and their connection with customers.
Partners were trained on both “hard skills” and “soft skills” when hired to work for a Starbucks retail store. This equal emphasis on the “hard” and “soft” skills further highlighted Starbucks strategy to make the experience pleasant for the customer.     The factors that contributed to Starbucks` success were their experiential branding strategy, their reach, product variety, customer service and quality. The compelling factor of the value proposition was that Starbucks was tightly integrated. It met the needs of its target market. In the early 1990s, Starbucks` target market consisted mainly of coffee connoisseurs. Starbucks was less about the coffee itself and more about the experience around the consumption of coffee. The brand image it developed during this period was synonymous with its ‘live coffee’ mantra. It became America’s third place – after home and work. They created a place other than work and home where people could meet and hang out. They brought the Italian coffee shop culture to America. They had three branding components – the coffee itself, customer intimacy and the ambience. To enforce their coffee standards, Starbucks directly dealt with growers in different countries to purchase green coffee beans, oversaw the custom-roasting process and also controlled distribution to retail stores around the world. They created an uplifting experience for the customers by their `customer intimacy` strategy. The ambience they provided was based on the human spirit, sense of community and the need for people to come together.     There are numerous factors that paved the way for Starbucks’ success during the early nineties. I believe that one of their strengths was good knowledge of who their potential customers were and how to please them with their profile, assortment and services. One also has to take notice of their clear vision of becoming America’s third place, this tells me that they’ve had an aggressive vision from the start. And of course they’ve matched this with their strategy, from 1992-2002 the company opened about 3500 stores all across America. This gives the company a yearly growth rate of around 350 stores, an impressive number. They also licensed out another 1500 stores. This allowed them to become a household name for the regular American, and the strong brand name was created with all the advantages that comes along with it. They enjoyed plenty of first-mover advantages. All this was financed by boldly taking the company public, despite doubts from most analysts regarding the company concept. And who was the power behind this decision, if not Howard Schulz? Responsible for much of the success, Howard Schulz and his team have proven that their aggressive strategy’s have been key in the success of the company. In other words the management is a big contributor. I’d also like to bring up the human capital of the company, or as the employees are called, the company “partners”. Since the Starbucks concept of creating an experience for the customer goes hand in hand with partner satisfaction, management have been quite generous to their employees. They’ve for instance provided them with health insurance and stock options. For Starbucks it is key to create long lasting relationships with customers (these customers have proven to be very profitable for the company), demanding good relationships between baristas and customers. Keeping a low employee turnover rate both with baristas and managers has definitely contributed to the company’s success.…

    The history of Starbucks began in Seattle, WA on March 30th 1971 where three associates, Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker decided to start their own business. They were passionate about coffee and created a small coffee shop. The store initially just sold roasted coffee beans as well as tealeaves and spices rather than the drinks they have become so famous for. The small did well and they rapidly opened six more stores in Seattle, becoming the largest coffee roaster of Washington State, but things began to change in the 80s. In 1982 they hired Howard Schultz as a marketing director and shortly after they sent him to Italy to attend an international housewares show. Schultz has been amazed by the exciting coffee culture of Italy. He saw there was a great opportunity for a business as he watched all the people gathering and enjoying their drinks at the coffee bar. At his return, Schultz described his great idea and tried to convince the owners that the future was to sell espresso by the cup directly to the customers and not just coffee beans. They allowed him to have a small coffee corner in one of their stores; it became an immediate success and showed the potential for this kind of service. However, the owners were not ready to enter the restaurant business and preferred to stay with their original plan of selling whole beans. Schultz branched out on his own and quit Starbucks to open his own coffee place, directly inspired by the Italian cafés. His store became quickly successful and a few years later, in 1987, he bought Starbucks and its six stores with the help of investors that he convinced about his project. His vision was right and by the end of 1987 he was at the head of 17 stores. His business idea has been rapidly spread out on the entire United States, starting from the Northwest to the Midwest.
