Starkville Donation Box
We were given the project of designing a new and improved donation box for the Salvation Army store in Starkville, MS. The previous donation box had proven to be ineffective and therefore needed to be improved or changed. The group has worked to design this box to be everything that the Salvation Army needs and wants. We have discussed different designs for this box, and have come up with our design for this donation box and its parts. We have determined what we believe to be the most practical and useful design for the box and access to the box. While the basic design has been finished, we still must decide precise measurements and materials to be used. This project has several objectives that the Salvation Army desires to be accomplished, regarding the box: higher security, greater holding capacity, and minimal cost. Security has become an issue with the current version of the donation box due to the easy access for any passerby’s. People have been frequently stealing what others have donated, and have …show more content…
We believe that a very good way to achieve this is to utilize what resources we have already, and after inspecting the current donation box very carefully we have concluded that, while it has its defects, including it as another section it would be to our benefit. The cost used to improve upon the door to the current box would be far less than discarding it entirely and using up more material for a third compartment. If we build more containers, sectioning and attaching them to the current box, we will successfully limit the overall cost, allowing us to expand and make the box even better. The exact cost has still yet to be figured out and is one of the last objectives to be met. We are continuing to do research on materials and their prices so that we can make the most cost effective box we can. This objective should be met by the beginning of November at the very

Giving (verb): to freely transfer the possession of (something) to (someone); hand over to. When one gives to someone or does something special for someone, it is a win-win situation. In fact, the feeling of happiness is always mutual in those cases. No matter how big, small, concrete, or abstract the act of kindness is, it will go a long way nevertheless. The winter season - that is, the season for giving - is approaching, and it is a great time to “kick off” the amiable gestures for family and friends now. For me, personally, I would like to help cook a tasty dessert for my family to marvel over.…

Emily Andrews argues in her essay “Why I Don’t Spare “Spare Change”” that it does more harm than good to give money to beggars on the street rather than giving to an organization such as United Way to help the needy, pointing out that “one cannot be certain that one is giving to a needy individual” and that by giving to a charitable organization “ones money is likely to be used wisely.”…

We started to collect money all around the school during breakfast and lunch; we called the movement “Drop in the Bucket”. We raised 2,018.5 dollars on the first week which was significant; the movement grew gradually week after week until one day, I decided to expand it. I realized that a material could be recycled to provide the perfect shelter for Haiti like the vinyl tarps that are used for outdoor advertising. Some tarps measures more than 75 feet in length and can provide excellent shelters. We were able to ship a set of tarps in the mid February. With the Sacred Heart delivery, nearly 10,000 square feet of shelter have been provided utilizing the recycled material. We also created a “Food and Toiletries Drive” where students were able to drop non-refrigerated food and bathroom utilities materials in the Media Center at any time. Fundraisings were also included, for purchasing toys, educational books, sleeping bags, batteries and many other utilities. I figured that Haiti might not retrieve in one, two, three or maybe ten years, but my goal as a native Haitian was to try the best of my capability to aid as much as…

The Epic of Gilgamesh is an ancient Mesopotamian epic about a king who is two thirds god and one third man. The king does not meet his expectations of leadership as he is selfish and often angers the Gods. When his companion Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh goes off on a quest to attain immortality. He fails in this quest and eventually dies, but through his travel he came to terms with his own mortality and his greatness lived on. While the main characters are men, women have small but important roles in the Epic of Gilgamesh. The women in this epic reveal that ancient Mesopotamians valued womenÕs roles as child bearers and transmitters of civilization. While the Epic of Gilgamesh reveals much about Mesopotamian religion, the goddesses described also reveal, in some ways, how the Mesopotamian viewed and valued women. Ishtar is the goddess of both love and war, this shows that women have the power to be both wonderful and productive or destructive and horrible. A womanÕs most important role in life is to bear children and a woman who cannot bear children is seen as destructive to the population. Only a woman has the capacity to create life and that makes her important and valuable. The one who created the earth, according to the Epic of Gilgamesh, was a goddess, a woman. The wife of the sun is the dawn, giving birth to a new day. Because of…

Another challenge we discussed was the obstacle of finding homeless people in the streets and what we would do with excess donations/clothing. We understand that we will not just find homeless individuals anywhere in the streets especially on cold days So we decided prior to coming out to hand our care packages we will note and create routes based on where we have seen homeless staying in the past. We will also have contacted a homeless shelter in order to donate any excess…

The Food Bank was the perfect place to offer our services and it was an honor to participate with my fellow peers on this particular volunteer experience. The staff and volunteers welcomed us with warm, open arms. Due to prior registration through one of our students, those arms were overly outstretched. As a class, we had an opportunity to participate in the packaging of the foods that were being donated to those families in need in the Houston area. It was our job to sort these foods in their designated containers. These containers needed to be separated for items such as canned foods, sweets, bottled drinks, and household items just to name a few. Before the rules of engagement were discussed, the people facilitating the whole movement provided us with general rules we needed to adhere to promote the overall experience. In this beginning, proper instruction was given to all concerning the Do’s and Don’ts of doing such a task. This task required us to be active, and to remain on our feet while adhering to a few rules. Ultimately, they wanted to make sure the process would be a smooth one. There were tons of boxes in the back, where we had to go and retrieve them, separating the contents in the bins. After the bins were filled up to the top, we now transferred them to on movable shelves that stacked bins into the back. This process ran smoothly and we had no problems assisting others. As time progressed, we had opportunities to get to know some of the participants when we stopped for lunch. Many of the volunteers who partook in this experience showed the same amount of willingness to help the community as the University of Houston-Victoria students. We all worked as a team and had a great time doing it.…
