Good or bad, Johnny is maturing way faster than he should. We see it when he smokes cigarettes, murders someone to help Ponyboy, and risks his life to save other children. At the time of Johnny’s death he is only 16 years old, yet he has the maturity of someone long beyond his years. He even tells Ponyboy to stay golden, which means to stay innocent and young. He’s saying that even though the Greasers is all Ponyboy has ever known he needs to stay young and a child for as long as he can. Once Ponyboy loses his innocence he won’t be able to get it back. Stay golden is still relevant even know. Whether it’s the temptation of drugs, alcohol and sex. Kids today are still growing up too fast. Trying to be ready for adulthood when they are still essentially only kids. It is also relevant in the way that there is a certain fresh mindedness that teenagers have. Ponyboy sees that there is a problem, that the only thing that separates the Greasers and the Socs are money, other than that they are the same. Still, Ponyboy only knows how to solve problems one way -- fighting. Maybe that’s also what Johnny means when he tells Ponyboy to stay golden. Maybe he’s saying to try to stay open minded, to see problems and to fix them. This movie is a heartbreaker that also teaches you a thing or two. It’s a story of youth, growing up, and undying friendship. It's a tearjerker and a heart melter. I loved it the second time I watched it as

For starters, Johnny is a brave kid. The text states,”I swear, you three are the bravest kids I’ve seen in a long time” (Hinton, 81). This quote explains that when Dally, Ponyboy, and Johnny went to go save some kids that were stuck inside a burning church, Johnny and his friends went to go save them and the school teacher, Jerry, called them brave because they were risking their own lives for someone else’. “I had to. He comes from an extremely abusive home and needs the greaser gang just as much as they needed him. He needs them for protection and a sense of purpose. While the gang needs him because Johnny gives them a sense of purpose and justification of their violence without Johnny, the gang would be next to nothing. Johnny has big black eyes, a tanned face, jet-black hair with grease in it and has a slight build. Due to his father constantly beating him and his mother who always ignores him the greasers are always looking out for Johnny and trying to protect him. Dally who is the leader of the greasers especially watches out for Johnny, in return he hero worships Dally. Throughout the novel Johnny changes at various times. First a usually mild and quiet Johnny murders Bob and then takes control of the situation proven by when he told Ponyboy to go to Dally knowing he will get them out of trouble and when he goes out and gets supplies. Later on he changes in his relationship with Ponyboy, during their five-day stay in Windrixville they both grow extremely close, even closer than they were…

Johnny is an outsider to the greasers because Ponyboy recites a poem and he is able to comprehend it. If the rest of the gang heard the poem, they would not understand it. This is why Ponyboy says “You aren’t like the rest of the gang. They just don’t dig.”(Doc D). Randy is an outsider too because he doesn’t want to fight. He says “it doesn’t do any good.”(Doc E) Randy can see things for how they really are, and in the end he calls Ponyboy “kid” instead of “greaser”. This is when Ponyboy realizes that Randy is “just a guy.”…

Towards the middle of the story, Ponyboy displays loyalty. The author establishes this when Johnny stabbed Bob and wanted to run away. Johnny says to Pony, “We gotta get out of here, get somewhere, run away. The police’ll be here soon.” (Hinton 57) Johnny is worrying about being caught. He wants to run away. Ponyboy runs away with him. Loyalty is a huge heroic act. He could have stranded Johnny in the park all alone,…

The Socs, on the other hand, are more cool in personality and do not feel the deep and intense emotions that Ponyboy does emanate. Cherry Valance, a gratifying Soc, believes this statement to be accurate and makes the comment, “You greasers have a different set of values. You’re more emotional. We’re sophisticated-cool to the point of not feeling anything” (Hinton 38). The quote further proves the facet of emotion that withholds the position of Ponyboy as a Greaser. Ponyboy wants to keep these feelings bottled up, which would make him more like a Soc, but he is incapable of keeping them inside and must express himself. Therefore, his emotions make him more alike with the Greasers. Furthermore, Ponyboy is an intellectual character who thinks differently from the Socs and has a more philosophical edge to him. For example, on page 77, Ponyboy recites the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay”. This was when he and Johnny were at the church and Ponyboy wanted to express himself and the poem did just that. He used his philosophical points of view to emote what he was feeling at that point in time. Ponyboy is too emotional to change to a Soc and is more eligible to remain as a…

The title of this book relates to the story, because in the book, Ponyboy and Johnny are "outsiders." They can be thought of as Outsiders because they are labeled Greasers although they do not act like hoodlums, like the rest of the Greasers. They are thought of as Greasers just because they live on the East Side of town, and because they slick back their hair. But Ponyboy and Johnny are different then all of the other Greasers because they show their emotions, and are sensitive.…

“‘Nothing gold can stay.’ I was remembering a poem that I'd read once. ‘What?’ ‘Nature’s first green is gold,/Her hardest hue to hold./Her early leaf’s a flower;/Then leaf subsides to leaf./ So Eden sank down to grief,/ So dawn goes down to day./Nothing gold can stay.’ Johnny was staring at me. ‘Where’d you learn that? That was what I meant’”(77). Although Johnny isn't the same as Ponyboy, he understands a small part of the poem, showing Ponyboy that since he is different from the rest of the greasers, only part of him absolutely shows itself to individual people. “Sent from heaven? Had he gotten a good look at Dallas?’No, we’re just greasers,’ I said. I was too worried and scared to appreciate the fact that he was trying to be funny”(95). Being different doesn't happen intentionally, it happens absent-mindedly, Ponyboy is a great example of this because he said he was a greaser and was proud of it. However, people can be both an outcast and a unique…

“Ponyboy, listen don’t get tough. You’re not like the rest of us and don’t try to be…”-Two-bit Matthews Page 171. The Outsiders is a novel written by S.E Hinton in the 1960’s, the novel is based on a true story. The story is about Ponyboy, a teenager that belongs in the gang called Greasers. There is another gang that opposes the Greasers called the Socs. The two gangs live in two sides of Oklahoma, the Greasers being in the east, and the Socs being in the west. The town dislikes both gangs, but in particular the greasers. The greasers are disliked much more than the socs because they are poor and dirty. Even though the socs are in fact even more ruthless than the greasers, they are "socially acceptable" due to their appearance and money. One night the socs make a surprise attack on Ponyboy and his Johnny, and in self-defense Johnny kills a soc. They run to a close friends (Dallas) house. Dallas gives them some money and tells them to go to an abandoned church out of town. So they spend a couple nights there. One day after going out to buy groceries they return to the church to see that it is on fire. Ponyboy and Johnny went in to save the children from the burning church. Johnny is trapped inside. Dallas goes into save him. Then, the church collapses. They are rushed to the hospital. Ponyboy and Dallas are okay, but Johnny is severely injured. Ponyboy talks with one of the Socs and they both discuss about how they are tired of fighting. Everyone should be equal . Later, the Greasers and Socs get into an enormous brawl , but in the end the Greasers win.…
