Steal Like An Artist Reshaped My Reading Life
Throughout this course I have grown tremendously as both a person and a writer. The knowledge I gained because of Dr. A's Composition 123 class is invaluable to me. Every other English class I have taken throughout my life has only hindered and halted my love of reading and writing, but this course re-ignited passions I thought had long burned out. Austin Kleon's Steal Like an Artist reshaped my perceptions, and Pat Conroy's My Reading Life changed my writing.
One way Kleon's Steal Like an Artist reshaped my perceptions is through his self-care advice. Kleon advises artists to be healthy and boring in order to have the ability to devote everything to art. For instance, Kleon states that "it takes a lot of energy to be creative. You don't have that energy if you waste it on other stuff" (119). Kleon's advice allowed me to realize how terribly unhealthy I had let myself become in the past two years, and inspired me to make a change for the benefit of myself and my art. I quit partying, I eat healthier, and I am making an effort to exercise. I found Kleon's work instrumental to my personal growth.

I found Conroy's rigorous approach to understanding reading and writing inspiring. For example, Conroy recalls his mother saying to him, "'Look it up, Pat,' Mom said. 'If we don't know a word, we can't understand the sentence'" (8). I found Conroy's mother's drive to understand texts inspiring. I used to skip over words in sentences I did not understand; I used context clues to imply the meaning of a word, but doing so inhibited my ability to fully comprehend the word and apply to my own writing. Thanks to Conroy's writing I now analyze words I am unfamiliar with; this has allowed me to expand my vocabulary and better apply new words to my

In the past a thousand weeks, I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the quarter ends, I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived my fifth quarter but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Somehow, after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into my papers that I wrote in this quarter, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas. With help from an awesome teacher and my partner, I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

I have learned more in the five weeks of this dual enrollment class than I have in my previous years of both my middle school years and my freshman/sophomore year. My previous years have mostly been just trying to fine tune my acquired skills from elementary and middle school. Although, it has worked I still think that those courses did not allow me to flourish into the experienced writer than I am capable of becoming. The individual and collaborative techniques that professor Belmont has taught us have greatly heightened my skills in…
