Reflective Essay On My Writing Skills
Through Advanced Composition my writing skills have grown immensely. I have become a more vibrant and expressive writer while still being aware of the subtle nuances of grammar and mechanics. I learned how to view writing as a process, rather than just a goal. I wrote a personal memoir about a game of chess I once played with a friend(Benchmark #1). In this paper, I learned how the value of outlining, and listing as part of the writing process. I had to approach a mediocre story with a fresh new perspective. I learned how to analyze literature more effectively when I wrote a literary analysis (Benchmark #2). I saw the importance of analyzing literature and never seeing it at face value. I also learned from seeing the tools that the author, of the book I read, used to engage readers. There seemed to be lots of stories and allegories in the book that gave vivid picture as to what was being described. …show more content…

I focused on the using the grammar skills I recently learned in class, in my paper. I learned the importance of writing syntactically sound sentences, and using the rules of grammar.

When writing the argumentative research paper (Benchmark #4), I developed a lot in my skill of research. The topic that I choose for this project was quite broad, so finding meaningful articles was challenging. I learned how to search through databases to find valid sources that aid your paper. Lastly and most importantly I learned the basics of MLA (Modern Language Association) with an open letter to the public. This letter taught me the basics of citing sources, and giving credit where credit is due.

I want to thank you for taking the time to read through my portfolio. I have learned a lot in this class and I hope my work reflects

ENG101 has taught me the importance of using references and how using the proper writing guidelines can improve someone’s writings. Using references establishes that the thoughts and information that you are providing is accurate and true. When using the proper writing guidelines it helps one put their thoughts into proper order and make sense of what is being said. Using the guidelines also assists in making the writing process not so daunting, by breaking it up into smaller pieces. My writing goals for my next writing course would be to improve on the skills that I have gained while taking this course. I will use more references and the writing guidelines to make my writing the best it can be and not such a daunting task. I need to improve on using better grammar and spelling. I forget where to use commas a lot of the time. Overall, I feel that I did well in this course and learned some valuable tools to take with me to assist in other courses that I will take, as well as my working environment.…

In the beginning of the semester, my writing skills were subpar, but after this class, I have learned skills that have improved my writing abilities. One skill I have mastered is brainstorming organization. I have always believed that brainstorming was an important part of the writing process, but struggled with how to appropriately organize the information I brainstormed. Before beginning each paper, I now take the guidelines given to me and immediately look at the requirements of my paper. Once, aware of the requirements I make a plan as to how I plan to include them in my paper. In doing this, I am able to set framework for the entire paper, and then I am able to fill in the details as I continue on in the writing process. For each paper,…

Throughout the years of my schooling experience I’ve adapted a love for writing and have came to love writing essays. As students moan and groan I silently rejoice because I get a chance to express myself through writing. To me, writing is like an art people use to express things the can’t say face to face. Out of the essays I have written so far this year I definitely have my favorite little pieces. Every writer has that little ‘I really love this part’ in any of their pieces. But, altogether my favorite thing about my writing would be my creativeness while writing. In my personal narrative, titled The Memories That Make Me, the introduction states “Over the months and years, we’ve grown like a melody to its lyrics, inseparable. And now the memories stick like glue… I was almost too quick to judge.” Personally, the metaphor incorporated into the introduction sets off the paper. Towards the beginning of the year we studied origin stories. How Murder Came To Be was one of the most challenging but the…

Last year, I was still a sophomore. I did not expect to graduate early. I know nothing about college. I could not tell the differences between a essay and a passage, know how to start a essay, or having any writing skill. I was a careless student. Deadline and Due Day were not a big problem for me. My sophomore year was also my first school year in the United State. The only English class that I have ever taken was English 10, and it mostly focused on improving my reading skill. One day, I was called up by my counselor, Mr. Mitchell. He said I still need half credit of English to complete the graduation requirement, which means I had to take two English classes in one semester. I was planning to take English 12 and English 11 at the same time, because I thought English 12 would be the easiest choice. Unfortunately, They did not have any English 12 class at fourth hour. After considering for a moment, I decided to take this class, College Writing.…

What has probably been the most impactful in my writing would be the collaborative writing process. While criticism may destroy my self-esteem it has helped quiet an enormous bit my in writing. Before, I would rarely let people revise my work because of how they would diminish the essay I worked so hard for. Now, I freely ask people to check my work, mostly because of how I miss simple mistakes. This method of writing has opened me to new ideas that I have never thought of before. A huge problem that I never noticed was all the syntax that I did. Collaborative writing has probably been the best gift that I have received from this dual course that I am…

I learned many new skills and also practice different ways of thinking. My observation skills were practiced and improved, my planning skills were bolstered, my research skills were practiced, and writing was challenged. I learned to think about many things like the limits of a piece of writing or observation, what it means to contextualize and why that is important, and how to focus on using framing language to make my essays flow. Overall, this class has exposed me to many new things and has improved my writing skills and my understanding of the writing…

After having spent a whole semester focused on writing, I was able to learn more on writing and improve my writing skills. I don’t think I have a biggest strength. Writing as my second language feels terrible for me. If I have to choose one, I think my thoughts in essays are not bad. I always think for a long time before I start to write. I think a good thought or a good idea will improve my essay a lot. This has helped me to capture readers’ attention and in bringing my points out clearly. However, my greatest weakness when writing is that I am unable to bring to a close any article I am writing on. I find it difficult to get the right words to use in the conclusion. Arriving at the conclusion poses a great difficulty…

Writing for me always was a problem. When I was in fifth grade I was in Cuba, at that time is when teacher teach you how to write essay, and how to put a comma splice. I never learned the correct form of using grammar, verb, adverb, conjunction, because I came to the United State. When I started the school here I had to learn English first, so I really didn’t focus on how to write properly. Middle school for me was hard with the writing stuff. I didn’t know how to write properly so my English teacher always was sending notes to my parent “that I wasn’t doing well with my writing “. And it was not a problem of language, it just was a problem that I didn’t know how to write a perfect paragraph or the conjugation of words. I start high…

How did I learn to write? In order for me to develop my writing skills and Americanize my essays and its organizations, I had to first overcome and develop some major metacognitive skills in myself which each of them helped me realize one missing aspect of a good essay. An aspect of a good essay is for it to include a good amount of knowledge coupled with facts and it shall reflect the writer’s thoughts and point. Moreover, if a writer is out to make an argument he/she surely have to be well aware and knowledgeable regarding the topic. I was facing memorization issues at which I wasn’t aware of at first in that was stopping me from applying good thoughts into my essays. By reading articles regarding the metocognition I realized that the problem I was facing is known…

This first chapter is based on challenging and exploring your conceptions about writing, reading, and research. My ideas about writing before reading this chapter were different from what I realized now. Growing up writing was always my second favorite subject, behind math. I felt like my work was never proficient, and sharing my writing made my vulnerable. I hated how my work was graded. Most of all I disliked the lack of feedback I usually received. Most of the time it left me unable to progress my skills and has hindered me. To me feedback is very important, and is not just a grade but rather comments, ideas, questions and concerns that helps a writer with their work and also progress their knowledge. I feel most comfortable writing when…

I wrote essays and papers when I previously attended college. Each of my instructors usually wrote good remarks on them. Of course, that was years ago. Since returning to school, I am realizing that I have a lot of work to do, especially if I want to write great essays. So far, these lessons have identified some of my usual common mistakes, such as using the thesaurus too much and the basic rules of writing (Bethel University, n.d.). The thesaurus is useful when used correctly, but I have been guilty of completely changing the meaning of my words (Bethel University, n.d.). I realized that using harder to pronounce words made it harder for others to understand my writing (Bethel University, n.d.). As I continue to practice my writing skills each week, I believe that my co-workers,…

At the beginning of the semester, my impression on writing essays was that doing them was bothersome and tiring. Towards the end of the semester, my feelings have completely changed. First I changed my writing style and then I changed my personal habits. For the actual writing part I took more time developing the outline. With concern to my own personal habits I simply organized the way I managed my allotted time between working on the paper’s structure and the paper itself. Moving on to discussing the essays I will rank them in order from difficult to easy: rhetorical analysis, summary, argumentative, character analysis, memoir, and lastly the reflective essay. Out of these six essays I am choosing the character analysis simply…
