The article explores the works of Stephen Sondheim, and what other people thought of it. It has opinions from other musical theater producers and audience members. The article introduces Ted Chapin, a young admirer of Stephen Sondheim, talks about one of Sondheim’s pieces called company in which he states “American musical theater had been set on a path
to the future,” (Chapin qtd. in Smith 111). This statement is talking about how Stephen Sondheim started to think about his music in a dark and emotional way. Obviously, Stephen Sondheim expressed his work in a way that made it enjoyable and relatable for the audience.
The article stresses the work and fame of Stephen Sondheim. Although, that is not exactly what I am looking to argue for my Project Eagle, I can use the opinions of other people to express how his work came across to the public. I could make the argument that Stephen Sondheim introduced a new role for women to play, that was enjoyable and memorable for the audience. The article supports my Project Eagle argument, and makes my argument easier to argue.
This article has interested me into looking into some more reviews on Stephen Sondheim's work. I would like to argue the fact that Stephen Sondheim's success was because of his feminist aspect of his literature. I plan on using the sources from the audience’s point of view, and then attempt to find an article on Sondheim’s feminist literature. I look forward to finding more interesting information on the life and feminist aspect of Stephen Sondheim’s life.
