It is evident that individuals would see Virgil Tibbs as the highest skilled man that the City of Wells has for their homicide, yet the chief wants to reject his service simply because he is of colored skin. They believe that it is an insult to have a black man perform a job better than a white man, despite all of their qualifications. “...Just what the hell do you do? [referring to the homicide], well, you might ask to borrow a homicide expert. And… what do you do if you have one… and he has a black skin?... Living in a Western Society in the 21st Century, individuals want to believe that the idea of discrimination and racism of any minority has been abolished, yet looking around America and Canada it doesn’t seem as so.
