their audience’s beliefs Fox News wrote many unbalanced statements.
The first thing to remember is the considerable amount of differences between liberals and conservatives. They have different points of views on many things. The topics in which they differ most are abortion, embryonic stem cell research, death penalty, affirmative action, and euthanasia & physician-assisted suicide. For example, liberals believe in pro-abortion, the usage of embryos for stem cell research, physician assistance during suicide, affirmative action as a necessity for minorities, and abolishment of the death penalty. Conservatives believe in the exact opposite. Liberalists are considered left-wing and conservatives are considered right- wing. Many Democrats consider themselves to be liberalists and conservatives identify as republicans. Fox News Channel has conducted many studies showing a majority of their viewers agree with the point of views of conservatism.
One of the major topics that many of their viewers may feel very opinionated about is the topic of embryonic stem cell research. Many individuals that prefer Fox News over other news sources do not agree with the use of aborted embryos for research. To please the needs of their viewers they provide biased articles pertaining to the subject. One article in particular is The Case for and Against Stem Cell Research.
One may say that the beginning statement of each discussion implies some type of bias. The first statement that supports the liberal view on the subject states, “Most critics of the embryo research ban contend that week-old blastocysts are not human beings, and that destroying those embryos does not constitute killing” (Fox News). This statement plays on the emotions of any sane human-being. Its content jumps out at the reader. The opening statement of any form of writing or speech is often times an attention getter. This statement may suggest that an individual who is in support of embryonic stem cell research is heartless. Words such as destroying, embryo killing, and not human beings stands out to the reader. This suggests that what the reader is reading is a bad thing. However, the conservative point of view in the article begins with a more gentle approach.
Fox News Channel’s opening statement of the case against stem cell research states, “Opponents of research on embryonic cells, including many religious and anti-abortion groups, contend that embryos are human beings with the same rights — and thus entitled to the same protections against abuse — as anyone else” (Fox News). Once again words such as embryos and human beings are mentioned. Whereas words such as killing and destroy have been replaced by more sweet-tempered words such as religious, anti-abortion, rights, and protections against abuse. The reader may predetermine that this is a positive thing before reading the complete passage. Furthermore, this example is not the only thing that insinuates media bias in the article.
Religion plays a major part of the article as well. Religion is the forefront for many statements that are made in the case against stem cell research. Religion is mentioned in the first sentence and continues to reappear throughout many of the paragraphs. Fox News Channel used a statement from a well-known, beloved, and respected individual to adhere to the feelings of their audience. The statement was from Pope John Paul II. Having support from someone that is idolized by many of their readers allowed them to insidiously shine light upon their point of view. Diversity also played a major part in the article.
Fox News showed a lack of diversity when stating the opinions of the people.
The conservative belief in relation to the article mentioned people in proper form. The mentioning of Pope John Paul II and the United Methodist church offered insight from specific individuals. The only informal mentioning was that of scientists and bioethicists. One may say the mentioning of the beliefs of scientists and bioethicists adds to the opinion of their personal beliefs. In the portion of the article that speaks of the beliefs held by liberals there is not one mentioning of anyone in a formal form. Everyone is referred to as they, supporters, and critics. For the most part numbers are also mentioned when discussing bioethicists. The article stated, “In a July 1999 statement, 100 bioethicists, scientists and legal scholars said they objected to embryonic stem cell research on the grounds that such research is both unethical and unnecessary” (Fox News). The mentioning of numbers was nonexistent in regards to the point of view of liberal beliefs. The setup of the article overall presented a framework of media
bias.
The most compelling evidence of media bias is in the scheme of the article. The article begins with the case against embryonic stem cell research. First of all, bringing forth the idea that embryonic stem cell research is an atrocious idea first may steer the overall opinion of the reader. The case against embryonic stem cell research offered many valid points comparatively the case for it was presented in a lackluster fashion. Ending the article with liberal insight shows that the conservative point of reference has superiority over it.
In conclusion, Fox News uses media bias to steer the opinion of their viewers. They cater to an audience that identifies as conservative. The article offers the opinions of both parties, but the insight that is stated is comparatively bias. The opening statements as well as the overall setup of the article has a conservative agenda. The unbalanced statements in the article skews the opinion of the viewers and allows Fox News Channel to adhere to the beliefs of its audience.
