Stereotypes In The 21st Century
Century is a local insurance company that basically snatches the vast majority of CIS majors graduating from UWSP. They provide exactly what newly graduated college students crave, a paycheck and freedom. You’re allowed to change between the different departments at Century. You can join up as a web developer and if you lose the love you once had for developing you can easily swap to customer service or backend coding. Initially I knew nothing about Century so the 4 speakers, one from each branch of Century and their manager, first introduced themselves then branched off into explaining what Century provides. The introductions were a little awkward with many of the presenters coming to represent Century for the first time. Every single presenter was a graduate from Stevens Point within the last 5 years. We were able to relate with them on a more personal level once we learned that at some point …show more content…
If all of the presenters were gruff and arrogant the presentation would’ve been a massive joke for the entire group. No one would’ve bothered to listen. They had many powerpoint slides but didn’t use them as a crutch but rather as a tool to help us remember information. They barely looked at the information on the screen and instead addressed the audience. They really got into the speech and had loads of interactions with the audience. The fluid hand motions and walking around the class almost infused everyone with energy because it was just simply funny. I was forced to go to this presentation, I wasn’t really looking for another internship but the charismatic presenters made time fly and turned a punishment into an extremely fun activity. You have to be relatable and current with your audience, become involved with the audience and energetic and people will actually care enough to pay attention to your

The speaker I selected was Professor Randy Pausch. I have read the book, “The Last Lecture” and was very moved by it. In the introduction he absolutely grabbed my attention. He was very humorous and engaging. Even using humor to discuss “the elephant in the room” and to show everyone how he was in good health. He makes you want to listen in the way he opened his “speech”. His nonverbal communication is excellent. He focuses on the audience (eye contact) through the entire speech. He walks around and seems open instead of standing in one place. He moves his hands while talking. Going back to the introduction, he gets down on the floor and does push-ups to prove his health at this point. He uses hand gestures that are appropriate for what he is…

Most workers who work in a clothing store or a store in general are being told to follow the minority customers around the store because they believe that all minorities steal which is not true. I am a minority and I do not steal, just because most minority steal does not mean all of them steal. Being woman males think that we cannot do the things that they do and that we should stay home to raise children, cook, and clean. When I was in the Army National Guard my first unit had an even mixture of males and…

Today, some may argue that we at the dawn of a new emerging Progressive Era. Most historians cite the Progressive Era as the period between 1890-1920. The United States saw massive industrialization, paradigm changing inventions such as electricity, the telephone, and automobile, but also extensive activism in social change and political reform. Walter Lippmann wrote Public Opinion in the twilight of the Progressive Era. In chapters, eight and nine, Lippmann explores the idea of “progress” in terms of stereotypes and addresses the “blind spot” inherent of all stereotypes. He delves deep into the multifaceted relationship of moral codes with how they relate to stereotypes and the facts.…

Henry Thoreau developed many ideas throughout his lifetime that have been highly influential for many years. Perhaps the most famous of these ideas were those presented in Civil Disobedience. Within this text, Thoreau presents highly unconventional ideas for his time. These ideas, however, lead to many of the ideals held by Americans today. We all have encountered some type of stereotype or prejudices. A stereotype that I had to face was age prejudice by me being so young sometimes people don't set the high expectations for you that other people would at an older age because they expect for you to make mistakes. At times my mindset isn't where most kids are at my age. I skipped pre k and I am supposed to be in the 8th grade. When I tell people my age they be like " OMG you are young to be the grade that you are in" this is a perfect example of what I am stating that people sometimes think that you have to be average and can't go over and beyond your years.…

It is a part of human nature to make judgments on others based solely on appearances. The short story “Flight Patterns” by Sherman Alexie reveals the sheer pervasiveness of stereotypes in American culture. The main character, William, is a walking contradiction in that he is a Native American businessman that loves his job and is always traveling, but hates to fly and hates to leave his family. He is also a victim of discriminations, yet he too makes his own judgments on people. In this paper I am going to explore the theme of stereotypes and contradictions in the story, and argue that stereotypes are so ingrained into American society that those who are stereotyped do not even realize they are stereotyping others.…

There is much about diversity in the United States that I have learned about but there is much that I have yet to encounter. There are many things that have also been brought to my attention or have been more so recognized in my eyes. We all have an understanding of what goes on or what is involved in our country but we rarely are aware of all the details of what goes on with each group. The complexity of each group has its own unique characteristics that have impelled me to understand and to better relate and accept other groups as a part of society.…

Everyone has their own opinions on what beauty consists of. It is in cliché expression “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” This means beauty can come from within a person’s soul or from the outside of looking at woman’s body. As it just happened, saying the word “beauty” on most occasions comes hand in hand with the word woman. In the story “A Woman’s Beauty: Put – Down or Power Source” by Susan Sontag. Sontag states; “To be called beautiful is thought to name something essential to women’s character and concerns. (In contrast to men whose essence is to be strong or effective, or competent.)” (Sontag.488.1) The word beautiful may not seem synonymous with men in 2015 but handsome is, as the word “handsome” feels more masculine.…

In the first six months of 2012, the police, security guards, and self appointed agents of “justice” have killed 110 African-American men, women, and children. Since its publication, there have been 10 additional killings in total, 2012, which means that in 2012, there has been 1 killing every 36 hours. Many of these deaths are the consequences of stop and frisk policies, racial profiling, and a culture of White racist stereotyping of African Americans as criminals and suspects. According to Rosa Clemente, a member of Malcolm X Grassroots Movement and former vice-presidential candidate of the Green Party, “Nowhere is a Black woman or man safe from racial profiling, invasive policing, constant surveillance, and overriding…

In regards to the media, being Caucasian brings respect and authority. People are willing to hear what a Caucasian person’s opinion is. Whether it is in newspapers, magazines, films, radio, and television, Caucasians typically receive the most respect and are represented more. On the other hand, those who are not Caucasian tend to be shunned or silenced in the media. They are pushed to the background. They are barely seen and their voices aren’t heard as much. Non-whites are underrepresented in the media, especially in advertising and television. Non-white people are experiencing symbolic annihilation.…

Stereotypes types in America is out of controlled. Once someone say something about a certain group everyone believes that this group of people actually do what that person said. When it’s actually that one person that only does that. Stereotypes are only here to separate and organize people into a group. Stereotypes are not here to fix the problem there here to make it worse and if we don’t take a stand, it can get to the point where we can’t control it. One popular stereotype that people say a lot is if you’re Asian then that means you love math or if you get an A+ on your test than it means that you failed. Stereotypes like that are stereotypes that give people false image of a culture real look.…

He used a PowerPoint to show the information, which was very detailed and didn’t have that much pictures. He was also just reading off the slides, but explains the details thoroughly. The information that was put out was repetitive but at the same time I think was a technique to ensure that the audience will remember what was important. He was very conversational, but the tone of his voice made it sound like he was too firm or harsh. I think the tone of his voice made sure that we are taking this kind of situations seriously.…
