Stereotypes Of Sexual Harassment Via Social Media
I chose this question because sexual harassment is an occurrence that can be so life changing for an individual that unfortunately has been face-to face with this reality. It has become very obvious that platforms such as social media have become inundated with instances of harassment. I feel very strongly against sexual harassment in any type of environment, it is a behavior that is unwelcomed, offending and in almost all cases humiliating and intimidating to the victim. Unfortunately, women, more than men, are the biggest targets for online sexual harassment. Harassment via media is displayed through offensive photos, the constant insistence of going on dates via, comments/emails and behaviors that are sexually suggestive to name a few. What is even more upsetting is that individuals with a higher social status or "power" seem to be the biggest offenders the act. In our current society, glorified individuals are usually not reprimanded for their acts of harassment; this is where …show more content…
Most victims do not come out because the harassment is usually done by somebody who intimidates them, usually a boss or somebody of higher social status. For example, there is a huge scandal currently happening related to Harvey Weinstein, a big time Hollywood producer that throughout the years was sexually harassing the stars he worked with. Many of the victims did not speak up at the time that the incidents occurred because they were afraid of being "blacklisted". The perpetrator had more power than them at the time, and he basically paid them off or threatened them to keep quiet. This is an example of how people who harass often use the power of their position within organizations. Another example specific to social media sexual harassment is when an individual sends another person an unsolicited nude photo of them

In "Reckless Eyeballing: Sexual harassment on Campus", Katie Roiphe takes the issue of Sexual Harassment and makes it be seen in a totally different way from the norm. Roiphe states that because of the wide definition of sexual harassment that occurs within our society today it takes women back a step in equality. Because anything from a glance to a sexual advancement that is unwelcome can be perceived to be sexual harassment, women are in fact giving men more power than they actually possess. In order to be a sexual being, a person must approach someone else and see if they are interested sexually. However, with all the fears about sexual harassment claims part of this titillating experience between man and woman is being forgotten.…

    Optimal Foraging Theory

Changes in forage production may affect potential productivity of herbivore populations, especially in stochastic environments, which may alter the predictions set by general theories (Fulbright and Ortega-S 2006). Diets selected by herbivores are a function of the nutritional and chemical characteristics of forages, the herbivore’s nutritional requirements, and the time available to forage (Timmons et al. 2010). Optimal foraging theory predicts animals promote their fitness maximizing the net rate of energy gain through different foraging strategies (Hughes 1993). A premise in ungulate foraging theory is that as population density increases, resource competition increases, resulting in the depletion of palatable plant species (Pianka 1988).…

Yet less than 10% of their students tell a college employee and even a smaller number officially report it. It is no different in NOVA, the number of reports on sexual harassment is very low and consequently disturbing. There could be multiple reasons why students are not reporting sexual harassment incidents. If a change is wanted understanding these reasons should be the first step. Most common reasons why victims fall to report according to AAUM are, victims often believe that no one will do anything about the problem. When a person is sexually harassed, it is common to feel their problem is not that “big of a deal” or important to report and no one will take it seriously. Second, victims are afraid of being blamed, blaming the victim has been done so commonly done by perpetrators that victims withhold them-self form reporting. Sexual assault victims often feel that there are many reasons to why they should not report but the biggest reason being it is not “a bid deal” playes the biggest role. Educational institutes need to educate their students and faculties to speak out. Moreover, sexual harassment has a gray and blurry line for both the victims and the departments that are dealing with sexual misconducts. The fact that it is nearly impossible to bring a proof of sexual harassment unlike sexual assault make…

Respect, observant, self-deprecating, judgments and honesty. These are the words that come to mind when reflecting back on the novel The Great Gatsby. The narrator, Nick, is a quiet, reflective 30 year old man who moves to New York to learn about the bonding business. Now, it is probably easy to think of many differences between myself, a 17 year old girl living in the 21st century, and Nick a 30 year old man alive during the 1920’s but perhaps the similarities aren't quite as clear. Well if you look below the surface it is found that there are many traits that Nick and I share. The American Dream is defined as how a person would achieve the perfect life. I believe that Nick and I share the same ideas of attaining this “perfect life”. By becoming successful, focusing on individualism, and holding genuine happiness. Although Nick and I may…

We all have encountered some type of stereotype or prejudices. A stereotype that I had to face was age prejudice by me being so young sometimes people don't set the high expectations for you that other people would at an older age because they expect for you to make mistakes. At times my mindset isn't where most kids are at my age. I skipped pre k and I am supposed to be in the 8th grade. When I tell people my age they be like " OMG you are young to be the grade that you are in" this is a perfect example of what I am stating that people sometimes think that you have to be average and can't go over and beyond your years.…

I have been a victim of sexual harassment in the workplace. I had experienced degrading comments and physical actions from a male supervisor. After enduring the disrespect and humiliation I protected myself and took action. I did not want to feel like I did not have a voice, let alone a man make me disrespected and inferior to him. I ultimately did not receive the results I wanted; because he was a superior in the company they felt it was just a miscommunication, so nothing was done. I remained at the company regardless of the outcome. In the end I felt empowered that I am a woman, I was able to be strong and stand for what I thought was right for me and for other women in the company. “Under evolving legal standards, sexual harassment is recognized as any unwanted and unwelcome sexual advances that interfere with a person’s ability to perform a job and enjoy the benefits of a job.” (Schaefer, R. T. (2012) “Despite these rulings, it is very difficult legally and emotionally for a person to bring forward a case of sexual harassment (Domino, 1995, Roscigno and Schimdt, 2007). (Schaefer, R. T. “Communication research and theory suggest that the mass media are an important source of information about African Americans and media portrayals contribute to public perceptions of African Americans” (Punyanunt-Carter 241). For many years women have had unfair treatment in their workplace and it had gone unjustified. Even though in 1964 the Civil Rights Act was pasted women still get discriminated and harassed in different work fields. Every year women across the world seek counsel from Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) due to unwanted sexual advances, hostile work environment, lack of management training, neglecting to respond to employee complaints, and sex discrimination. In certain corporations such as prisons and farm houses women are seen as prey to men. Female workers have decided to not endure the harassment, unwanted advances, to be ignored by management, and not be judged or taken advantage of because of their sex. I was motivated by the two articles to bring awareness of sexual harassment by men that are in management positions and take advantage of their roles in the workplace.…

    Sexism In Workplace

    • 1407 Words
    • 6 Pages

Sexual harassment stems from the objectification of women because if some men believe that a woman is just an object, they think they can do anything they want. A prime example of a workplace sexual harassment case is that of Christina Rich, a financial advisor from New Zealand. Rich was sexually harassed, discriminated, victim blamed, and bullied. She was repeatedly sexually harassed by her former immediate boss and was once by a company partner. Rich sent in complaints to higher up bosses of the company, but nothing happened. For instance, “She alleged that between 1999 and 2004, repeated sexual harassment went unchecked, her complaints about discrimination were not taken seriously, and she was punished by being banned from carrying out her job” (NZH 1). None of her bosses cared, and they told her that it was not a big deal. In 2004, Rich quit, and in 2008, she filled a workplace sexism and harassment lawsuit against the company and won. Many women have or are being sexually harassed at work; however, most of them are not as lucky as Rich. Most women who are sexually harassed at work never tell anyone because they are too scared. When a woman does tell someone about the sexual harassment, she is usually victim blamed and told it was her fault, which is why the other women are afraid to tell their bosses about the harassment. Also, like in Rich’s case, if a woman tells her boss about the harassment,…

Over the years sexual harassment has been revered on a higher level of unacceptability than ever before. Companies are setting high standards for employees concerning sexual harassment. Usually, they implement a code of ethics to encourage an ethical decision making process in the minds of their employees. People inside an organization need to know what is considered to be illicit behavior. With sexual harassment, the scale is very narrow. It can range from petitioning sexual favors, vulgar language, or any type of inappropriate touching. In the case study, “An accusation of Sexual harassment in Pro Sports,” the employers were dealing with being accused of verbally abusing and sexually harassing Ms. Brown Sanders over a two year period and once she blew the whistle to top management, she was fired a month later.…
