tissues, they help correct bone disorders, and they help cure certain diseases (O’Sullivan 11-12). That is the only way steroids can be used safely. The other drugs that are used and abused are pain relievers and pain killers. They can be used safely if they are used correctly and not abused. Today, steroid use is no longer limited to the elite of the sports world.
It has spread to athletes of all ages and levels of competition. Any athletic that wants to win at all cost uses steroids (Dolan 29). The world’s drugs can be divided into two basic types-- the medical drugs and the drugs that are abused. In the winning edge drug category, you’ll find three especially patent and dangerous drugs-- the anabolic steroids, the amphetamines, and what are called, “brake drugs (Dolan 18).” An athletics desire for that winning edge, which will help make you a champion is one of the main forces behind today’s drug problem in sports (Dolan 16). Drugs in sports can make that team or player have an unfair advantage (Nelson 1-3). The sport commissioners are very strict on drug test to ensure that all the sports stay fair (Bjornlund 29). When an athlete decides to take drugs, that athlete is putting themselves at risk to horrible injuries or even death (Nelson 4-6). When an athlete takes steroids it gives that person unfair muscle growth. Steroids make your muscles grow at a very increased rate; they also change a person's mood almost like they are becoming bipolar. The steroids make your muscles fill up with water to get bigger faster. With all these athletes taking steroids it makes the sports look
bad. Drugs are very bad for you especially if you play sports. Your body makes and balances its own hormones. The hormonal balance of the human body is very fragile and can be tipped easily. The result can be irreparable damage done to your body. In boys, the use of anabolic steroids interferes with the natural production of testosterone. Anabolic steroids are dangerous because they increase muscle strength quickly but tissues and tendons are not strengthened at the same rate. Damage can be done to the heart muscle by either form of human growth hormone from gaining weight too fast. Anabolic androgenic steroids use causes sexual aggressiveness that has led to criminal behavior, such as rape and murder. The use of anabolic steroids also causes hair loss which causes bald spots on athletics. Some athletes have tried using various steroid drugs by mouth or by injection into the bloodstream. Steroids once they are in your body they injury you from the inside out. Steroids can also be used by a method called doping. Gene doping is the transfer of cells or genetic elements such as DNA and RNA. Blood doping takes place when the drug is entered by blood transfusions, by injections of erythepoiatin (EPO), and injections of synthetic oxygen carriers. Corticotropin is a pituitary hormone used by athletes to increase corticosterone levels in blood. Arginine is an essential amino acid taken by athletes who hope to increase growth hormone levels. Vasopressin is another pituitary hormone used to stimulate growth hormones. Levodopa is used by athletes to stimulate growth hormones. Beta blockers are used by athletes to stimulate growth hormones. Somatotropin is a human growth hormone, “HGH”, is the synthetic form. Erythropoietin is a glycoprotein hormone produced in human kidneys. The metabolic and systemic side effects of “hGH” and “HGH” include gigontismor aeromeyoly. Clonidine is used by athletes to stimulate growth hormones.
There is really only one way that the problem of drugs in sports can be fixed. It can be fixed by all sports conducting mandatory drug test on all athletes. All athletes should be tested for performance enhancing drugs. The current method for testing drugs is unfair to the athletes; one reason is that the test results are often incorrect. All of sports drug testing should be done in special drug testing facilities. Drug testing or dope testing is performed in almost all sports and sports bodies are faced with policing drug abuse. They are also responsible for publishing a list of banned substances. We must do something to save athletes from risking their lives and health. The way the companies or sports teams release player’s drug test should be changed. The way they do it now is they release it to the public. That is unfair to the player because the results are sometimes incorrect. That has ruined many athletes’ reputations. The drug test results should be given to the player and kept private. The commissioners of each sport need to come up with a list of consequences for the athletics that fail drug test. The first offense should be a fine of a certain amount of money. The second offense could be where the player gets suspended for a certain number of games and so on. We need this so the athletics of the world will think twice before they take drugs.
