Frontline’s League of Denial explains how the glorification of violence plays a role in head injuries in the NFL. The National Football League’s chronic brain injury rates are increasing very quickly, causing the league to increase protocol to provide better protection for the players. It is hard to find a football player today whose body hasn’t paid a very high price; the love of the game may be destroying the brains of NFL players.…
In the entertainment industry, football is America’s choice of sport. Not only does it drive fans crazy just watching it, but a game that brings really serious injuries to players but yet, generates billions of dollars during the season.…
NFL claims to be an organization that safeguards the game integrity, is ethical in its…
The life threatening spinal-cord injury that Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett suffered on Sunday while trying to make a tackle adds urgency to a question that gnaws at the NFL with each passing season — is playing pro football worth the risks?…
Football, like every sport has its risks, but so the players should be able to make their own decisions when it comes to whether or not they play. To most people football is just a game where people throw a ball and tackle each other, but to certain families and people it is more than just a game. It is a way of a life and there is more to risk out on that field than just winning or losing. There are repercussions if we were to cut out the game, football players and others gain from the game, and it brings people and communities together in unimaginable ways.…
“Pro football is like nuclear warfare. There are no winners, only survivors.” -Frank Gifford. Football is a full contact sport, so it is not supposed to be safe, and no one ever expected it to be safe. Recently the effects of countless head injuries endured by players many years ago had just started to surface. The NFL has started to attempt to make professional football as safe as they possibly can without ruining the game. The majority of the rules the NFL has in place are necessary when it comes to how the game is played and maintaining the safest environment on the football field for the players, however some of the other rules being added to the rulebook are arguably unnecessary and truthfully ridiculous. Players are more often than not…
After reading the article “Would I Let My Son Play Football?” by Scott Fujita, I would definitely let my child play the sport ,despite the fact that the sport has many negative side effects. What is really hypocritical to me is when Scott states “No.” (Fujita 2), when he was asked if he would let his son play football. I disagree with what he said because he played football his whole life. How is it possible that he loves the sport, but would not allow his child to play? One quote I do agree with is when he said “..now I actually get paid to talk about football on television. Imagine the hypocrisy”(Fujita 4). I agree with the quote because it is ironic to me how he was an NFL player and loved the sport, but is now talking down on it and realises…
As the continuing problem of NFL players getting in trouble with the law, whether its public intoxication, drunken driving, public urination, assault and battery, resisting arrest, and drug possession, rises there are a few problems that should be addressed. These are the economic, legal, and ethical issues. Each of these are uniquely important for the fines that players receive cost not only the player but also the team, the legal charges give a bad reputation not only to the player but to the league as well. NFL players should set a good example and be role models for up and coming athletes, high school football players, college player, fans in general, and even little kids.…
Football plays a great part in the United States. It is a part of our culture and is a part of the atmosphere in the fall when school is about to start. It is an amusing experience for a lot of people and their families. This is what make football a part of our culture. One thing to actually think about though is what is essentially happening to the children, the young adults, and athletes involved in this sport; they are growing older then, attending college or even playing professional football with head injuries. Understanding that in football there are many collisions of the head to somebody else’s head or other body parts. Although, the brain sits inside of a cranial vault, also known as the skull. Even wearing the best equipment…
In “When It Comes to Doping, Pro Football Punts,” Fran Tarkenton questions the light shed on certain professional sports due to performance-enhancing drugs. While baseball, cycling, and track and field have been riddled with stories of performance-enhancing drugs, football has managed to remain unscathed throughout the years. Tarkenton’s article in the Wall Street Journal targets all sports enthusiast who care that football is a sport that is slowly getting taken over by performance-enhancing drugs, and the players are paying the ultimate price for the entertainment of others. Through the use of several persuasive strategies, Tarkenton creates an effective argument on the issue of footballs transformation throughout the years and the consequences that have arisen since.…
If anything defines the culture of the United States, it is American Football. This spectator sport is extremely popular and the NFL has recently been making a name for itself in terms of players of a different race, sexual orientation, and class. But there is a particular dark side that the NFL tries to sweep under the rug. NFL players are rarely punished for what they do outside the stadium, unless the incident is widely publicized or circulated. Recently, a video surfaced of Ray Rice and Janay Palmer surfaced showing the NFL star dragging his fianceé from a Revel Casino elevator.…
When it comes to sports in America, The National Football League dominates all others in popularity. For the past 30 consecutive years surveys by the Harris Poll have determined that the NFL is the favorite among fans . 23.6 million fans tune in to watch football every Sunday night on average . However there is a dark side to the NFL’s popularity: Its large amount of criminals. A whopping 55.4% of athletes in the NFL have criminal records . This number is slightly below the national average of arrests for that age group per 100,000, yet it is still concerning because of how young fans see them as role models and icons while the majority of other men age 25-30 are not. Though these athletes have criminal records a lot of them still have huge…
Similar to other sports football playing has unhealthy long term repercussions like Alzheimer's and memory loss. It would be extremely unknowledgeble to believe that a contact sport like football that has been professionally played by athletes for just over 90 years, would not lead to mental problems. The idea of destroying the game of football seems impossible due to to the millions who enjoy the game and the individuals who have made careers out of not only participating in the activity for most of the year, but the people who are responsible for the events even happening. Destroying Sunday night football or the annual super bowl is absurd and will not be done easily. Furthermore, if football is destroyed because of brain damage…
Safety in the National Football League has forever been the most talked about subject in terms of rule changing for the game. The biggest ongoing injury in the NFL besides torn MCL's is concussions. A concussion is a blow to the head that causes major trauma and confusion or temporary incapacity. In some recent cases it has triggered nerves in the players brain's to have suicidal thoughts. Since the NFL was founded in 1920 there has been multiple tragic suicidal deaths caused from concussions. The most recent case was Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend in front of her mom then proceeded to drive to the teams facility where he would take his life with a gun in front of his coaching staff. It has been brought to the NFL's attention that there has to be some serious rule changing and suspending the players that commit theses illegal and violent hits that cause these concussions.…
Which can inhibit every day life. Concussions are a serious matter and need to be handled appropriately. Now should we stop playing sports that is a question that is above me to answer; because of the amount of money the NFL, NBA, MLB & other sports bring in each year due to ads and tickets sales. There has even been reports of the NFL covering up traces of people trying to bring up the topic of concussion. Since it is such a huge topic and controversial topic it needs to be fully investigated to insure the safety of millions around the world. Specifically, football players with the amount of contact they go through each…
