Help seeking stigma within this study is known to be a major barrier that keeps people from seeking out psychological help. Self-compassion on the other hand is an action that requires and focuses on the way one treats oneself that evolves within the act of kindness and understanding. Meaning that being nonjudgmental to one’s own person means holding no judgments a factor that contributes as stated in this study is linked with the reduction of stigma. In order to get to this conclusion researchers did various things. Their research consisted of the participation of 369 undergraduates students of Midwestern University. In the research a larger percentage of females participated than males. The research was very diverse regarding its participants. Researchers collected data of how many of the participants had previously went out and actually searched help from a mental health professional. Those who participated did an online survey to gather course credit as well turned in consent forms. The research to gather data regarding both the individuals perceived public stigma and anticipated self-stigma were derived by the measure of the five item Stigma Scale for Receiving Psychological Help and 10 item Self- Stigma of Seeking Help Scale. In the five stigma scale participant rate 5 items from 1 meaning the strongly disagree to 5 meaning they strongly agree. The higher scores the more perceptions of social stigma is seen. Likewise the measuring of anticipated self-stigma is from 1 to 10 from strongly disagreeing to strongly agreeing. The higher the scores are it indicates larger projected self-stigma is demonstrated. The conclusions of the findings like how individuals who have self-compassion recognize how society looks at the action of looking for psychological help. By this they are less probable to apply this message to themselves in a critical matter. Which I definitely agree with the wanting of help does not make one week but shows one has the courage to go and search for help or even ask for it.
