Still I Rise
As I was reading throughout the packets of all the poems, one really stood out to me. Even though it was the first poem on the first page of the packet, it was very powerful. I felt like I could use it and understand it more than the other poems. The poem I read was “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou. It is an incredibly powerful poem written by someone with such a rough background. It really shows how she pushed through life and what she did to get through everything she went through. What this poem tells me is that no matter how long or how hard you get knocked down, you should always persevere.
The end of the first stanza says “You may trod me in the very dirt / But still, like dust, I’ll rise.” (Lines 3-4) This has a great hook into the poem and this was one of the lines that convinced me to write about this poem. It talks about how if you knock me down into the dirt and step on me, I’ll rise like something as little as dust. It compares herself to dust which I really found interesting. Something so small and meaningless does something so powerful. It was a great simile and she uses this method throughout the poem.

She went from trod in the dirt to kill me with hatefulness. I think she used this to show how far she will go through to end up persevering in the end. The author is willing to go through anything life puts her through. She then goes from dust to air. They are both really small, and I don’t know if she was intending on making it smaller, but I thought it was really cool how she did that. It kind of says that no matter how small you are, you have the ability to rise from anything. The author uses another simile but also increases and escalates her word choice which really made the poem more powerful and rise in

Upon reading the poem, imagery can be found throughout the entire poem. For example, in the first two lines you can imagine a doll being put away like a dead child in a chest, you cannot bring a dead child back to life. This is the burial of her childhood only to keep her memories and carry them with her for the rest of her life. Also, the second to last line where she is “wound,” twisted, “like the guts of a clock,” referring to her stomach. She feels a sense of anxiety here. This is her final emotion to conclude the poem. She fears growing up because of the responsibilities she will have to take on, the shame she felt when her period started, will…

The entire poem is written with a tone of sadness or depression. This evokes the senses of the reader by being able to sense how the girl is feeling and see how the words of others affect her. It can be pictured, this little girl who plays with the Barbie doll and it is just a toy, but to others it is the appearance that society wants and she soon realizes that when a fellow classmate hurts her with mean words. She can not go on with the fear that everyone sees her as imperfect or flawed, so in the end she gives up on trying and eventually gives up on herself. A simile in the poem, “Her good nature wore out/like a fan belt,” the message here is that she has given up on everything.…

Self respect and having confidence in yourself. This theme is clearly show throughout the whole poem in the form of the many different literary devices that Maya Angelou uses. For example the stanza: "You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like dust, I'll rise." This is a great example of Maya Angelou showing that no matter the obstacle, bullying, or harsh words that she is faced with and must overcome, she will never be defeated by the words or let them affect the way she feels about…

Moreover, John Updike not only sets the tone for this poem, he also uses the reader’s imagination by using symbolic imagery which he gracefully incorporates into the poem. In lines two through four, we find out that she was a young puppy that was just being potty trained. Furthermore, he also uses metaphors by using word pictures to imaginatively compare and show how each description resembles the other. In lines seven and eight he compares the family trying to play with her as blood filled up her skin and how her heart was learning to lie down forever.…

The poem discusses the funeral of a woman and how she is presented in her funeral as someone people would be more likely to romanticize than what she actually was, perhaps out of a misguided sign of respect. The other more hidden meaning behind the poem is the author's reaction to the women herself and how she is portrayed in almost a spiteful, angry way because of his anger over her wasting her life in gray dullness.…
