She believed that everyone should be treated equal regardless of neither their skin color nor the race. She wrote couple civil right poems however, I feel connected with “still I rise. She wrote that poem when she found out Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated. “Still I rise” is about people will tried to break you down. They will do everything in their power to make you feel unwanted, and shame of yourself. People will do everything; you make you look inferior, worthless. The theme behind this poem is self respect, and confident. She told us to rise up from any situation that you are facing. “You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise” (3-4). This quote is beyond powerful. This quote mean that the day you realize that people are treating like dirt, you will stand up for yourself. You will fight for what you believe. Stand up for yourself. In the first stanza, she started with “You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies, (1-2) and finished with “You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise” (3-4). This means that you can lie, disrespect me, abuse me, I will always rise from all conflict, challenges that I am facing. My strength, my mind, my attentions and my desire is bigger than everything. You can break me down physically but you are not strong enough to break me down mentally. You may think you won the war while I am down, but when I rise up, I will be stronger, and better. The purpose of this poem is to tell the readers to not give up and keep on fighting. This poem win an AFI Docs audience award for best feature, reports
