Kate Chopin’s story “The Story of Hour” brings many surprises between couples in an hour. Mrs. Mallard was a married lady who was under pressure in her marriage. When she heard about death of her husband, she weeps and sorrow but soon she feels relief and joyful about her future that belongs only to her. Mrs. Mallard who was a symbol for all the women during late 19th century was overwhelmed with her marriage and the society for lack of humans’ rights that applied for women.
Mrs. Mallard was a young lady who afflicted with a heart disease. Her sister broke the news of her husband’s death to her. She was devastated and couldn’t stop crying. She loved Mr. Mallard but she realized that after grieving; she can spend her time alone and free. Suddenly, someone open the door. It …show more content…
was Brantley Mallard. When Mrs. Mallard realized that her husband is still alive, she died of her heart disease.
Lack of rights caused Mrs. Mallard shows heart trouble symptoms. She was described as having heart issues. “Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble.”(1) The author does not talk about her problem throughout the story. Knowing that she had heart trouble, Richards and her sister did not take enough time to find out if the new is true. “He had only taken the time to assure himself of its truth by a second telegram, and had hastened to forestall any less careful, less tender friend in bearing the sad message.” (2) Richards did not wait for other information or identification of people in the train. He took the news to Mrs. Mallard’s sister.
Mrs. Mallard came to a conclusion that the death of her husband could be a newly found freedom for her. She was devastated when she heard the news. “She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone.” (3) Even though she was upset of losing him but she was excited for being free. She could see a bright future a head of herself. Her dreams crushed when she found out he is still alive. “When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease—of joy that kills.”(22) When she saw her husband alive, she was stressed because she didn’t want to go back to her old forced marriage.
The society’s pressure was the reason Mrs.
Mallard was married. She mentioned to be young and did not love her husband often. “Yet she had loved him—sometimes. Often she had not. What did it matter! What could love, the unsolved mystery?”(16) She described her marriage as unsolved mystery which implies that girls in the society need to get married in young ages. No one knew the reason to such tradition. “That blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature.”(14) The author describes such tradition also as blind persistence.
Women were not raised to question anything in a male dominated society. She was a symbol for all the women at the time who feels a relief after death of her husband. “Free, free, free!”(11) She realized that she did not have to be dependent on anyone. She had no right to debate or disagree with her husband. Mr. Mallard doesn’t appear to be abusive but she was frustrated and overwhelmed due to lack of rights. However, women’s right have been always an issue. In my opinion, the author purpose of writing The Story of an Hour is to demonstrate life of a young woman in male dominated
scarcity.
The story discuss the pure pressure on women such Mrs. Mallard in a masculinity homes and societies. They had to accept being weak and less than a man. "Free! Body and soul free!"(16) Said Mrs. Mallard after she found out about death of her husband. Even though she loved him sometimes but she felt that she doesn’t have to blindly obey what her husband tells her to do. She realized that she can do and be whoever she wants. After many years, women still do not have the same right as men in some part of the world. They have to accept that they are less than men and live their entire life under pressure.
Mrs. Mallard who was a symbol for all the women in the society at the time. She was overwhelmed in her marriage life. Women were not equal to men and did not have the same rights. They weren’t allowed to debate or discuss about their opinion. Are women as free as they truly deserve these days?
