Straight Edge is about you “claiming” Straight Edge. (Hebdige 2) Once you claim Straight Edge you are Straight Edge forever, unless, you “Break Edge”. Breaking edge is when you claim Straight Edge and while you say your Straight Edge you break the rules by drinking or smoking or taking drugs. It is not usually a big deal if someone does because most Straight Edgers know that Straight Edge is about you and yourself not someone else’s, but in some cases people take it serious and take violent action against it. This leads to another subset of Straight Edge followers know as Hardliners or Militant Straight Edge, these Straight Edgers involve in physical assaults all over the U.S during the 1980’s to current time. They go to the extremes of if they even see someone drinking or smoking they have them stop and if they don’t they assault them, sometimes even killing them. Police in some communities have Straight Edge classified as a gang due to the violence associated with militant Straight Edge groups. Although Straight Edge embraces some of the moral values held by most religions, Straight Edgers don’t all believe in god or any religion. Straight Edge is not a religion, like there is not group meeting there is not praise to one person or high archery. However, some Straight Edgers are members of organized churches, temples or mosques where they feel that Straight Edge beliefs fit in, also there are Straight Edgers that are atheists and agnostics. You don’t have to affiliate with any one particular religion to be Straight Edge, Straight edge is your life choices stemming from a desire to be true to yourself and not from any religious beliefs.
