Family life isn’t always easy-going. In fact, it can be very difficult at times. Many different types of stress are present in everyday life at home, and these stressors can have a large negative impact on everyone affected. Schools and the surrounding community often find ways to best help these struggling families to ensure that they are receiving the resources they need to get back up on their feet and moving in the right direction again.
Life Changing Events
Separation, divorce, and death in the family are all huge stressors for families, and these events are usually very traumatic, especially for children (Barbour, 2011, p. 110). Priorities often need to be realigned, communication may be altered, and interaction patterns may be modified (Barbour, 2001, p. 115). Also, families that include children with disabilities are suddenly exposed to a whole new world; this can be both scary and frustrating. These families, in particular, spend a great deal of time and energy on their child with disabilities by trying to come to terms with acceptance and finding ways for their children to “fit in” as best as possible. These families rely greatly on school and community resources like trustworthy teachers and specific support from various places, to give their children the best possible opportunities to succeed in everyday life.
Overall, these three sources have the potential to place a great deal of stress on family life. Thankfully, schools and communities have found ways to provide helpful services to these families in need. This has brought hope and peace to the lives of so many, while they are trying to trudge through these times of serious
