background checks and the tougher laws on firearms will occur in all legally owned gun shops across the United States. Having tougher gun laws will prevent future mass shootings and decrease the suicide rate.
The second amendment in the Bill of Rights states that United States citizens have the right to bear arms. Law making takes place at a state and federal level . United States has one of the highest hh murder rates in the world.
“ In the United States guns and homicide appear to go hand in hand” (Democrats). Now days it is very easy to get a gun in a short amount of time. In most crimes in today society guns are always almost linked to crimes. “Guns are involved in 1,000 crimes every 24 hours, guns take 29,000 lives every year.”( is there), firearms dominate the United States. At one point in time for a couple years people who were purchasing a firearm would have to pass a secure background check . These background checks would insure guns were not in the hands of the wrong people . The people of the United States wants the privilege of buying a gun to be taken away due to certain things that happen in the purchaser past. “2014 the supreme court passed a law banning any domestic violence offenders unable to buy a gun from legally owned gun shops.”( Gun control) Throughout the years violence skyrocketed with mass shootings and other types of shootings in the United States . In the mass shootings that occur in the United States the shooter who does the shootings usually buys the gun legally even when their background should have prevented them to buy a …show more content…
gun.
Looking back at American history there is a long trail of gun violence. “In 1998 Patrick Purdy killed five children with an assault rifle.”( A history). He purchased the rifle legally even though he had a long criminal background that today would “prohibit” him from buying any gun after having a background check. Dylan Roof a mass murder who mercily shot and killed nine people in a church in South Carolina. Dylann Roof was able to legally purchase a gun. Dylann had a criminal record and was being faced with drug charges which should have prohibit him from buying a gun legally. If gun laws were stricter than those nine people would still be alive .“ The need for tougher measures is clear” (Tough) families would still have their loved ones with them if there were sturdy background checks. When he went to go purchase a gun he did not have to undergo a background check because of an error and it allowed for background checks to expire. “ The stark body count of Americans lays bare the truth of a fearsome gun problem that deserves a full scale debate beyond Mr. Trump’s simplistic terrorism warnings.” (Democrats). Gun violence has been skyrocketing every year because of the lack of checks before purchasing a gun.
Year after year suicide deaths increases. “ Guns are responsible for roughly 30,000 deaths a year in America; more than half of those deaths are suicides” (Gun ownership) . Study shows that the waiting period law that requires people who are buying guns to wait a few days before purchasing a weapon to give people a calming down period lower suicides rates. The states that have waiting periods decreases the suicide rates and the states without an waiting period shows the increase in suicide rates.
Advanced background checks and stricter gun laws will drastically decrease the number of mass shootings per year and suicide deaths that occur in the United States. Proper advanced background checks will be conducted in all legally owned gun shops. These background checks will make sure that guns will not go to a the wrong person. Anyone who has had a consequential criminal or mental background will not be able to purchase a gun . If the United States refuses make theses changes to laws regarding guns than mass shootings will continue to occur and wreck people families.
