I believe that the United States gun control laws are way too lax. Guns are available to almost any citizen above the age of 18, with minor or no background checks. “The United States is one of the greatest nations in the world. But compared to our peers, we’re one of the worst when it comes to gun violence.
In America, you can be shot at an elementary school. You can be murdered at a church or movie theatre. You can even be executed on live TV — and yet there’s no real expectation of gun reform.” - Forbes.com, article by Dan Diamond Every American civilian is allowed to own a gun. It is stated in the US Constitution. The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." this law was adopted on December 15, 1791,when …show more content…
we actually had to defend ourselves against other people. But now? iIs it really needed? If guns are not available to the shooters, people wouldn’t have to “defend” themselves.
Background checks are required when buying guns, yet at many stores and gun shows none are happening.
Infact a shooting happened on April 2007 at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, “in which gunman Seung-Hui Cho killed thirty-two people. Just about any adult can go and buy a gun, without showing identification or passing a background check. As a result, Seung-Hui Cho, with a record of mental health problems, was able to open fire on classrooms at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in April 2007, killing and wounding many students and teachers.” Gunman Seung-Hui Cho bought his gun at a gunshow, with no background checks. If firearms were not available to the american public these 32 innocent victims wouldn't have died. The man who was lucky to have survived the shooting investigated the subject himself. He found out that at gun shows you can buy a gun in five minutes, and at a bit of a higher price you can skip the background checks. Every situation where there are armed civilians there are more chances of people
dying.
Having access to guns basically makes any situation more dangerous and Deadly. Jeffrey Voccola, Assistant Professor of Writing at Kutztown University, notes, "The average gun owner, no matter how responsible, is not trained in law enforcement or on how to handle life-threatening situations, so in most cases, if a threat occurs, increasing the number of guns only creates a more volatile and dangerous situation." None of the 62 mass shootings between 1982 and 2012 was stopped by an armed civilian.
More than 32,000 people per year are killed by guns in the United States, so why haven't we done anything yet.
