It affects our schools, our communities, our relationships, and our health. February 14th, 2018 marked the 17th school shooting in 2018 alone. Less than 3 months into the new year, and unlimited fear has been unleashed into the hearts of all parents and students. "Blood is being spilled on the floors of American classrooms, and that is not acceptable…" (Washington Post, 1). A senior in high school, David Hogg, was able to do speak better on behalf of the students then our lawmakers can. Our students have to march and protest for their lives, in the country of freedom. The country where everyone has equal opportunity, if you haven’t been shot and killed in the place where you pave the rest of your life. This shooting not only affects our community, it devastated our entire nation This was a tragedy to the world. The world mourned the deaths of what was one of the deadliest mass shootings in America. “We can't continue to hide behind falsehoods and political fear. We can't let elected officials mourn publicly then fail to do their job to protect us. We must enact strict and smart gun regulations.” (Tribune, 2) Our government is failing us. The generalized idea is that by controlling how guns are sold, our rights are being taken away. If guns are available to the entire population, with no real restrictions other than being of age, then we are giving every mentally ill or person with sociopathic tendencies the ability to act upon every impulse that they encounter. The age to own a gun is 18/19. This is unreasonable. Why is it that I can own a weapon capable of doing mass damage before I can make the decision to drink? Because we recognize that the effects of drinking underage are far more dangerous. Why? Because we lack the mental maturity and capacity to handle that responsibility. If we cannot handle drinking, how could we possibly handle a weapon capable of that much damage? All we ask for when we say gun control, is tighter regulation. If less of the general population can obtain these weapons, less events will occur where we harmed. If we perform efficient mental health evaluations and background checks, we can decrease the possibility of someone unstable coming in contact with a weapon. By increasing our regulations, and restricting access, we can improve safety in all areas of the
