Although Dr.
Farmer sees the concept of structure violence through view of primarily on public health, it could impacts anywhere in our human life, but what's important is it could lead to a lots of unnecessary human death whether it is caused by hunger or a baby got killed with simple vaccine preventable disease due to a social system that is not able to support. While structure violence is hard to see, it is difficult to identify its problem, and therefore we need to look for this issue closely and see where it ties to in our social system. For example, we know poverty and income inequality is closely related to life expectancy due to the relationship between health care and economic condition. Furthermore, there are a lots of other factors that make a huge differences in quality of life such as power, privilege and possibly social class and more. This is simply not acceptable, and shouldn't be the factors that control someone's life. I think that's what Dr. Farmer was trying to say in the Kidder
book. In the book. Dr. Farmer described a scene around the airport and compared it to rural Haiti. He said "I looked around. The airport, Charles de Gaulle, has an angular, steel-and-glass simplicity, which struck me just then as frighteningly complex, which made me feel projected into a future I didn’t understand. I thought of its duty-free shop, where one could buy first-class paté, confit d’oie, grand cru wines. “You started that letter on a hike in rural Haiti,” I mused aloud, thinking now of those arid highlands, of medieval peasant huts, donkey ambulances. “It seems like another world." (Mountains Beyond Mountains, 218)
I think that sentence literally saying that there is a invisible wall of modern society divide humanity into the powerful and privileged and the non-powerful and poor. As a result, the powerful and privileged group would not really know what is going on in the other part of the world (country) or it ultimately means we are living in the world that contain a huge structure inequalities problem. In essence, the concept of structure violence represent failures of social system in various forms that impact peoples' lives and situations, and most importantly, it is not often recognized as violence because it is not personal. I hope this concept of structure violence encourage the powerful people to look for better connection between the two group and ultimately find ways to save and help more peoples' lives.
