Outsiders Essay

Did you know that rival gangs have faced many of the same struggles? In the novel “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton there are two rival gangs, the Greasers and the Socs. The Greasers live on the Eastside of town and don’t have a lot of money. The Socs live on the Westside of town and are very wealthy. There are three problems that both gangs face: drinking and smoking, having parents who do not care about them, and rivalry with the opposing gang over a variety of issues. First of all, the Socs and the Greasers both drink and smoke, which leads them to do very bad things. Smoking and drinking can cause many problems for teenagers. In the article “Cool at 13, Adrift at 23”, it explains these effects, “Now in their early 20s, many of them have had difficulties with intimate relationships, alcohol and marijuana, and even criminal activity.” The Socs think they are so cool because they

In The Outsiders, it says “Johnny was breathing heavily and I noticed he was staring at the Soc’s hand. He was wearing three heavy rings. I looked quickly at Johnny, an idea dawning on me. I remembered it was a blue Mustang that had pulled up beside the vacant lot and that Johnny’s face had been cut up by someone wearing rings…”(page 44).This shows how the Socs do not like the Greasers. They hurt Johnny very badly and it scares Johnny to death, even as the months passed. They did not like each other and now the Greasers hated the Socs, especially Johnny. However, he remained too scared to stand up for himself. The Greasers also made the Socs mad because Robert Sheldon was drowning Ponyboy. Johnny then got scared and killed Robert. This shows how the Socs and the Greasers continuously struggled with each other. In anger, the Socs started a rumble (fight) with the Greasers. Therefore, both of the gangs struggle with each

Johnny Cade is another member of the greasers. A reason that he can be considered an outsider is because of how his outside life is at home. His life is very rough and poor because his family dose not care about anything that he dose. For example when Johnny is laying in a hospital bed dying his mom finally comes to see him after two days of being in that bed and Johnny wont let her see him because he thinks that she will just yell at him like always. Another reason why Johnny can fall into the description of the outsider is because he always thinks that you can find good in everyone even the most feared cold-hearted people. A way he shows this is when he tells Pony to ‘Stay gold” meaning never change. This means he has found the good in Pony and does not want him to lose that. This character, Johnny Cade, can be considered an outsider because of these…

The title of this book relates to the story, because in the book, Ponyboy and Johnny are "outsiders." They can be thought of as Outsiders because they are labeled Greasers although they do not act like hoodlums, like the rest of the Greasers. They are thought of as Greasers just because they live on the East Side of town, and because they slick back their hair. But Ponyboy and Johnny are different then all of the other Greasers because they show their emotions, and are sensitive.…

Both characters are quiet, scared of the Socs, lack parental guidance due to loss of parents and abusive parents, and both are the most innocent members of the greasers. On the other hand these two characters were different as well. Johnny was also different than Ponyboy by their age, being an only child, one carried a knife, one coming from abusive parents while the other lost his parents. Throughout the story readers are able to step into the world of these young men and see how both of their characters change and grow after time and through the tragic events that occur. The story is centered on the life of Ponyboy Curtis. In short the story is about two groups of people, the Socials (Socs) and the Greasers. It is a story of the poor and the rich against each other. These two gangs are full of people who dislike each other intensely. After Ponyboy is attacked by the Socs in the beginning of the novel, a fight breaks out between the two gangs. Then throughout the story more events unfold forcing Johnny and Ponyboy to go into hiding. After being attacked Johnny protects his friend and stabs a Social (Soc) who is attacking them. The boys run away and go into hiding and while they do so they also save a group of children from a burning church. Johnny is severely burnt and later on passes…

"Greasers are like hoods; we steal things and drive old souped up cars and hold up gas stations and have a gang fight once in a while." (Hinton 6) Bob Sheldon, a Soc in the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, was stabbed and killed by greaser, Johnny Cade. The greasers are considered the menace to society, because of the way they look and the actions they make. But what if I told you the only reason why 16-year old Johnny Cade stabbed Bob was because Bob and the others Socs were drowning Ponyboy... Socs are the real menaces to society because they assault and torment, they are selfish and disguise their personality with their appearance.…

Ponyboy and his gang are pitted against the hateful, judging, and cruel middle class and higher. They are discriminated against because of their lack of money, and are constantly being cornered and beat up. After being cornered by the Socs, Ponyboy was asked, “You guys know what Greasers are? White trash with long greasy hair,” to which Ponyboy replies “You know what a Soc is? White trash with mustangs and madras,” this shows that the Greasers are seen as nothing more than trouble makers with slicked back hair, compared to the rich Socs (Hinton (chapter 4, paragraph 16). Once again, the Socs are “the jet set, the West-side rich kids,” and that seems like the only thing that separates the Greasers and the Socs, but the these two gangs, that is the only thing that matters (Hinton 2). In a way, this conflict was beyond the characters control. They cannot control how they are treated by others and the lives they were born into. However, Ponyboy, did in a way overcome this obstacle by becoming friends with a Soc named Cherry with whom Ponyboy has a lot in common. Although their slight friendship creates a larger conflict, it changes Ponyboy’s assumption that all Socs are the…
