Since they devote a large amount into the sport year round, they are unable to get a job and therefore only live off the money that they could obtain from scholarships or from their parents. For example, college football games such as the USC vs UCLA match attract a large audience which means the schools are getting a lot of money from the entrance sells. Just like professional athletes, student athletes must practice and therefore deserve the same right to get paid, but if they do get paid, it takes away the purpose of becoming a professional athlete because they would not strive to become professional since they get paid from playing in college.
