Why Do Athletes Get Paid
There's a big controversy right now about athletes (especially in football) who bring in millions of dollars to university while never getting paid. Some say that the scholarship is payment enough. Others say that the athletes deserve a part of the money, and they might deserve it, but they doesn’t mean they need it. Athletes shouldn’t get part of what they make for the college.

Athletes in college may not make money from the games they play, but they don’t really need it either. They rarely have to pay tuition, they don’t pay for room and board, and they probably don’t pay for their food either. They have no need to make money off of their games because everything they need is already paid for. People say they deserve at least part of what they make, but the school uses it to better their school and facilities, so overall it’s being used for the players anyway.

They are playing because they love the sport, not because they will get payed well. They play because it earns them scholarships and free money for school. The money they earn is going for their schooling, not to be put in their pockets. It’s like an investment. If they go to a college to play, they get money to go to the college where they can play. And then once they graduate, they are professionals, and they get to earn a lot more money because they were paid to go to college to play. In conclusion, they should not get paid part of what they earn in college for three main reasons. One, they don’t need it to prosper or gain anything. Two, after they graduate, they will make so much more in the big leagues than they ever would in college, so it makes up for it. And last but not least, not getting part of the money is a major investment in their future, and it is more beneficial for them to not pocket

Some fans do not want the players to be paid because they feel that the true meaning of being a college athlete would be tarnished. A large majority of people oppose paying the athletes because they see them as students (Alex Prewitt). Also, fans want the “amatuer” label to matter (Dom Amore). Spectators believe that the players could let the money affect their game (Adriano Valente). Student-Athletes could let all the money get the best of them which would lead them to forget the reason why they are playing in college (Adriano Valente). Their youth might cause them to make impulsive decisions as well. For example, former NFL first round draft pick, Travis Taylor, spent $40,000 in a furniture store after he received his first rookie paycheck (Tom Farrey). Young athletes are already prone to making bad choices, giving them money could make their choices lead to severe consequences. However, paying the athletes would help the college and the athlete. I strongly believe that college athletes shouldn’t be paid because they're still amateurs at the sport. They aren’t professionals at the sport. Even though their in college they are still learning and they need to pass school then start getting a job to make money. If you compare college amateurs to professionals there will be a big difference and observe why they get paid it will make a lot of sense. According to the text it says “A gentleman never competes for money,” Walter Camp wrote in his 1893 handbook on college sports.”…

Many reasons go into why college athletes should obtain a pay check. First, the athletes are putting themselves at risk for injuries. Sure the rich families…

Student athletes should be compensated for their work, as they are the sole reason for the Athletic Program’s surplus in revenue. These athletes are working for the schools and are doing a service to the college that seems to go unnoticed. Colleges are using these athletes to boost their respective reputations and bring in revenue while not compensating these athletes for their work. Everywhere else athletes are paid, so why shouldn’t college students too? Some critics may argue that these student-athletes are amateurs, and if paid then are becoming professional athletes. The minor league for baseball could be considered an amateur sport, although they do receive pay according to the team’s revenue.…

However, compared to the revenue college programs earn, student athletes receive in return is very small. Mark’s article also argues that players put in full work towards their sport and there’s not much time for a job or even school work for them and they still don’t get paid., while coaches earn millions of dollars every year. So here is the point, if the NCAA, coaches, and athletic directors can earn huge amounts of money from student athletes, shouldn’t student athletes earn money as well? It would be nice if their scholarships would just give them a little spending cash as a way of thanking them for their effort, because without them the college athletic programs would be nothing. College athletes should get paid for playing because they spend most of their time toward their sport, it will keep more players in schools, and it will pay for more than just…

Playing a college sport is like a full time job, except the lack of financial benefits. College football and men’s basketball generate revenue of more than $6 billion every year, yet no money goes toward paying the people that make the sports possible (Bagaria). College sports would be non-existent without the devoted athletes who work hard and spend countless hours each and every day. Whether practicing, training, or playing in games, these athletes are involved in their sport all seven days of the week. College athletes put in almost the same amount of work as professional players do, but instead of making millions, rather they are receiving no financial benefits (Bagaria). College athletes deserve to be paid because they sacrifice so much for their team and deserve compensation. Secondly, college athletes not only deserve money because of their devotion, they also need it for their everyday life. During their athletic season, they do not receive any sort of payment for their efforts which would aide them financially and in everyday life (Bagaria). Most scholarships cover cost of housing and textbooks, but leave out basics such as food. Logically athletes need food, but their time and energy is spent on a “job” as an athlete…

Since they devote a large amount into the sport year round, they are unable to get a job and therefore only live off the money that they could obtain from scholarships or from their parents. For example, college football games such as the USC vs UCLA match attract a large audience which means the schools are getting a lot of money from the entrance sells. Just like professional athletes, student athletes must practice and therefore deserve the same right to get paid, but if they do get paid, it takes away the purpose of becoming a professional athlete because they would not strive to become professional since they get paid from playing in college. However, many people believe that the athletes should get paid because they think it is unfair that they make spend a lot of time, but people also argue that they should not be getting paid because they are not professional…
