College athletes are working more than 40 hours a week on their bodies and intelligence. While the average collegiate student just worries about their classes, student- athletes have 6 a.m. workouts, attend class after, and then right back to the grind to further and groom their athletic ability to stand out on game days. With all the hardwork and dedication these athletes show, they should at least get some compensation for their duties. In the end student-athletes in college are actually athlete-students. “All the hours of work an athlete puts in throughout the day and attending meetings and meetings while juggling class in between can be very stressful! It takes a lot to be able to pull that off, especially doing all that on few hours of sleep and rest” (Chavanelle 1). All the hard work, competitiveness and strong will is what makes the NCAA and universities big money. But none of it goes to the minions of college athletics. In 2011, “mediocre Texas A&M football raked in $41,915,428 of revenue for the season” (Dosh). In 2012, after an insane heisman-winning, record breaking inaugural season in the Southeastern Conference, “Johnny Manziel (Former Aggie Quarterback) brought in close to $120,000,000 for Aggie football” (Terbush). The university sold replica jerseys with Manziel’s number only, excluding his name and likeness, for $60 each and many other items with his number 2 on them. He brought in fans that were never Aggies and the university raked in a ton of revenue from ticket sales and merchandise. In the end of the season, Johnny and the other players never got to touch any of that revenue. It is pretty crazy how athletes can dedicate their lives to the sport they play in college and never get a shot in the pros or ever get compensated for the work they put in while attending the university. Student-athletes will continue being the minions of the NCAA and the university they represent, All the poverty line standing athletes and less fortunate in the collegiate world will never see a dime of the revenue they help rake in, but in the end, at least they can say
