Have you ever asked yourself, “Do I participate in enough school events?” Well, according to a study from Kansas University, they express how and why student athletes turn out smarter than the non student athletes. This is because high school sports takes a lot of focus, motivation and determination. Having this being said, high school sports for some people is a major issue because not everyone has the opportunity to get in one.
Focusing back onto the KU study, they state that “high school athletes perform better in school, persist to graduation more than non-athletes” (Krings). This seems to be true because the students athletes have to multitask by juggling three or more things; employed work, …show more content…
homework from school, the sport times, family events, etc.. For example, there is a student that is a junior in a local high school that has experienced a different type of injury every year in high school, from sprained ankles, to major brain and skull damage. He had to catch up on school-work, work, family events, appointments, sports, chores and many more. The feeling of being stressed out when being normal is terrible, could you imagine how much he was having. Well, that's for another essay, back to this one. Angela Lumpkin, a professor of health, sport and exercise sciences had a quick thought, “In general, an athlete is not smarter than a non-athlete, but I would argue, and i think our evidence suggests, that just having such a policy shows the student they need to take their studies seriously if they want to compete.”
On the other hand, we all know that if something good is coming, something bad has to be near.
A Washington State basketball coach wants high school sports to die. Instead of having high school sports, he wants to transform them into intramurals, like what the Europeans do. They have intramurals because they want all of the focus to go towards education. And if the parents want to keep the competition going, they could join an elite sports program. By being involved with elite programs, it attracts more attention to colleges and the amount of the offers rise to the roof. Another “great” reason why he wants them to go extinct is because students are not wanting to show up to the games.
However, when and where do the students not want to play? That is the whole reason why parents argue with the coaches on why doesn't their kid play in the game. And since we are adding gasoline to the fire, not all parents can afford elite programs. Maybe, they could afford it but the athlete doesn’t have a ride to all of the practices. These comebacks are just the beginning of why high school sports should live. Concluding this essay, high school sports are overall better for the parents, for the school, and most important one of all, the students. And just keep this in mind… a hypothesis was made by the University of Kansas and it said, “the more activities the students is involved, the higher the
grades.”
