Student Leadership Interview
The interview with Professor Golden provided an enlightening inside image into the profession. First, careful research into graduate schools is needed if teaching is planned. Many graudate schools no longer offer a composition specialization, only literary(Golden). Another fascinating piece of knowledge was, for the remedial education classes many institutes have a hard time finding staff to teach the courses. They can often be taught at the Bachelor’s level; thus allowing a graduate student to get more practicle experience and pay. There may be additional positions opening soon. Rumors have been circulating for years of a retire-off; as many humanities disciplines have faculty well past the standard retirement age (Golden). In the end, the interview was one of the most useful of the tools, as it gave me direct first hand insight from a professional in the field. …show more content…
The availability and often undersired nature of online classes in the field provides flexibility. My previous IT experience and abnormal sleep schedule make online classes highly compatible. Yet, the open geographic landscape of the profession allows for travel and employment in most countries on earth. Also, having a median salary that is above the national average is a nice added perk. As are the retirement, health, and educational oppurtunities afforded. Being a naturally volublous person, the central role of communication will be enjoyable. In the end, the Carreer Field Report has assured that I have finally begun to take the proper path in life towards a rewarding

I interviewed Becky Hendrix, Executive Director for Professional Care Services. I recently had the honor of interviewing someone in our community who has had more than twenty years of leadership experience in our community. The interview ended up taking much longer than I expected because I was so influenced by what she had to say, I did not want to miss anything. Mrs. Becky Hendrix started her career as a CPA back in the 80 's for the World Color Press. Her leadership abilities were quickly realized, and she was promoted to head CPA. From there she moved on to the Professional Care Service where she remained for fifteen years serving as a CPA, and finally working her way up to the Executive Director. Becky was in charge of over 187 employees. My conversation with Becky took a direction that I did not expect. She attributes her success to the leadership traits that she has learned over the years, and quoted many of the very ideas and theories almost verbatim from our class lecture. That was an incredible experience to witness firsthand how these traits become behaviors and practices.…

A leader is a person who has a vision (Owen, 2002). A leader has drive and is committed to achieving their goals and vision. Leaders focus their attention on problems that need to be fixed, and will tackle the situation at hand. Leaders are determined, motivated, careful planners and effective communicators. Leaders are positive and do not waste time and effort with negativity. Effective communication is more than just being able to speak and write. An effective leader's communication encourages people to work toward their goals. A leader is motivated and motivates everyone to contribute to the organization (Owen, 2002). All of these attributes are what I considered when choosing a Leader to interview. I have chosen to interview G.O. who currently works as a Director of Nursing, and has an extensive background in management. G.O. is someone I consider a strong Leader and mentor and is very positive and genuinely enjoys her job.…

I interviewed my sociology instructor Chelsea Bullard; she is a red head and has a very bubbly personality. In class she smiles and laughs frequently. Interviewing her was interesting because she is a grad student and has been in school for seven years and has two- three more years to go. Her experiences can be helpful for people that are undecided about their major. Declaring a major can be very scary. It’s normal for college students to find a new passion while in college straying from their intended major.…

The nurse manager of the cardiac rehabilitation unit has been a formal nurse leader for the past five years. The conversation began with a discussion about her personal leadership style and how it evolved from a knee jerk style to her current democratic style. Being a nurse leader requires adaptation and flexibility. Administration, Medicare, and certifying organizations require changes to be made frequently to improve patient care. These changes are often tied to service reimbursement, so they must be initiated swiftly. Many difficulties surround the role of leader in today’s health care. Being unprepared for a management role, avoiding micromanagement, and maintaining clinical competency were the biggest challenges identified during the transition and continuing role as nurse leader. Open communication was the key to overcoming the personal and professional challenges of being a leader. Formal and informal power influences the success of the organization and the role of a nurse manager. The nurse manager identified administration as a formal leader. Patients and her staff were recognized as informal leaders. Maintaining an open relationship with both formal and informal leaders is essential to achieving the organizations mission.…

What I have gathered from the description posted online about the “Model the Way” category, is that an exemplary leader sets the example of the behavior that the leader wishes to see in the world. Based on the self-assessment, the report says I scored an 18 out of 30. The average score of the observers gave me for this category was a 25.7. The lowest score being a 23 and the highest being a 27.The first thing I noticed from the report was that I for the majority of the questions, the average for Observers was always higher than the score for the self-assessment. I was reminded of the attitude I had when I took the self-assessment. Authenticity…
