Study Abroad Advantages
“Create, share, and apply knowledge to make Iowa and the World a better place.” That is the mission of Iowa State according to Iowa State University’s strategic plan. All the classes, clubs, and organizations are made to help Iowa State reach its mission. Iowa State must have students that can conduct research to solve the problems of this century. The students have to be able to communicate in order to share their findings with other people. Finally, they must be able to apply what they have learned in real world situations to either solve problems or improve a product. The one organization that I feel supports Iowa State's mission the most is the Study Abroad Center.

First off, globalization is here to stay. The world is working together more than it ever has before, and students who want to work in our interconnected world should study abroad. When employers are looking to hire, they love to find people who have studied abroad. Studying abroad is the most effective mean for students to develop needed skills because it gets them out of their comfort zone. People like to stick to what they know, and it is hard to learn anything new if you don’t put yourself out there. On study abroad trips you get to experience new cultures, environments, languages, and educational systems. The students get to see diversity from culture to culture firsthand. Through your first hand perspective you create new views and ideas on how the world works. While you are on your trip you practice these views and ideas so when you come back you can share them with your peers or coworkers. The knowledge you gained will somehow have a positive impact on your life and possibly the lives of others. This fits perfectly with supporting Iowa State's mission because you create new knowledge, share the knowledge, and then apply the knowledge to your everyday life. Not only does Iowa State have to support its own mission, it has to follow the rules of a land

Testimonies from students that have studied abroad from UIC strengthen my desire to do so as well. Studying abroad would allow me to explore my interests and meet many new people. Furthermore, I would love to contribute to the student-organized Red Shoes Review literary magazine. In my high school, I was a part of the literary magazine as well—I was in charge of advertising and was a part of the submissions process. This is an activity that I would really enjoy continuing in college. Another activity that I would definitely want to continue after high school is music. I play the flute and the piano, and I know that the UIC Honors College offers courses in music, which I would love to take and contribute to. Although I have many activities that I want to continue to do, I am excited to be able to try and explore many new things at…

As an International Business and Management double major with a Spanish minor, the study abroad program in Granada is essential to my academic growth. The semester abroad is not only required for my major but also, the immersion in the country is the only way to fully learn and appreciate the Spanish language as well as the culture. The Spanish classes offered during the Granada semester abroad are required for my major and learning them in the center of the Spanish culture is the best experience a student could ever hope for. The semester in Granada would also greatly contribute to my personal growth. No other time in my life will I be able to move to another country for three months and completely experience life in another culture. This semester abroad will help me to not only understand the culture of the clients I will hopefully be doing business with in the future but also to appreciate my own culture much more. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said, “those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own”. I believe that not only is this true of foreign languages, but also of foreign cultures. In order to understand your own culture, you must understand other cultures to see the vast differences and similarities. I believe this semester abroad is absolutely vital to my future success in my career as well as in my life. This semester in Granada would be nothing short of a life changing…

The study abroad fair brought to my attention many new learning opportunities that are available to us students. The program that stood out most to me was the CLEE Chile program. In this program you travel to Santiago, Chile for either a semester or for a full year. In this specific program, it focuses on the liberal arts, with subject areas from sociology, to political science, psychology, and more. You will receive 15-18 credits a semester you are on the trip. You will be living with a host family from Chile with the homestay housing option. Several sample courses are Social History of Chile and Native Art and Culture of the Americas. During the trip you get to experience Chile and see what it offers as you see how it differs from life in the United States. In part of the trip there are two weekend study trips which bring you to one of the most visually stunning places in northern Chile and the other to historical southern Chile. Most importantly you will get to experience the culture that Chile has to offer as you travel and do various activities.…

Before beginning the long and rewarding process of conducting international outreach, it is crucial to decide what the purpose of the team’s international outreach plan is. Committing to international outreach will become difficult if the sole intention is to receive awards or simply go on a vacation. It is important to understand that conducting international outreach is a multiyear process and is not to be expected to have an immediate impact. When pursuing international outreach, the intent is to give back and make an impact in the world. If these are the true intentions, the hard work will be worth it and it will become more self-rewarding. It will also be easy for others to tell the true meaning behind the project…
