I think the best way you can learn the foreign language is when you are directly exposed to it: I tried to communicate with native speakers, to listen to the pronunciation of the words and construction of the sentences. However, there is one problem with living in NYC , it is so multicultural that even English as language is culturally shaded. I watched TV paying extra attention to unfamiliar words and expanded my lexicon. I believe my English is improving every day as I discover new things for me, read new book or watch the TV programs. I have got a good experience in writing in English at my first…

In my experience that is learning a new language can be a difficult task for me. According to my memory, when I first time came to the United States, I can speak English, but just a little bit, for example: yes, no, thank you, and I am a Chinese student like that. When I prepared through the customhouse, I do not know what can I do in that time even I forgot how to say hello to the customhouse officer. Also the funniest point is when I passed smoothly the customhouse, I wanted to pee, but I do not knew how can I say the “restroom”, I just tried to ask an American, I said, “where is the WC?” Because in China, the public restroom we call that “WC”. And then, that guy said, “Excuse me?” I said that again, the guy still did not understand. Finally, I give up to asking, and hold it awhile, until I arrived to my aunt’s house, actually I had held it five hours. This is because I do not live in an English environment where we are forced to speak or write language. As far as I am concerned, I think the best way that learning the English or new language is through communicating with local people because they can expertly use the English language. I am sure that is very helpful, because this way is created now the Jones.…

With the development of globalization, people are seeking useful ways to become more internationalize to adapt to the future world. As a result, parents support their children to study abroad for further studies and adapt to different cultures. The numbers of students studying abroad have been increased largely in the twenty years. Undoubtedly, students can widen their horizons, get more life experiences and become more independent through studying abroad. However, every coin has two sides and studying abroad is not an exception. Studying abroad has a lot of fun, but certainly not easy. As a student, I personally think that the most challenge thing is the academic study. The challenge of academic language study consists in following classes, reading textbooks in timely period (Lin, Yi), understanding professors ' words, taking lecture notes, and giving oral presentations (Ziyan, Hong), asking professors questions and interacting in seminar discussions and so on. I, personally, think the reading and oral speech are very hard to international students especially to Chinese students in Saint Louis University because all my Chinese friends are struggling in reading English texts and communicating clearly in class.…

Many people, especially those who have not studied a foreign or second language, are easily irritated if they cannot quickly understand what non-native speakers are saying. This is sad but often true. The importance of good pronunciation can be easily realized by visiting a predominantly English speaking country and talking to the native speakers. If they constantly reply to your statements with “what?”, ”huh?” or ”could you repeat that”, then you know your pronunciation needs work. Going to a foreign country is the best way to assess your speaking skills. Keep in mind that your friends may be from the same country as you and make the same pronunciation mistakes. For this reason they cannot accurately judge your speaking abilities. If you should visit another country, go out and talk to people. You may want the comfort of speaking in your native language but to become a better English speaker,…
