Succeed In New Situation Analysis
The article, “Succeed in New Situations” by Keith Rollag provides a lot of valuable points for individuals entering into new environments and meeting new people. As people began to take on new jobs, the must be mindful of how to use the get to know others skills. Countless times, many professionals have stumbled across introducing themselves, remembering names, and asking questions in new environments. Anxiety is rooted in those activates, because we have been taught since childhood to avoid strangers. Also, human history shows that caution is at our best advantage when meeting new people, which reflects why it’s not in our nature to automatically get to know others. Public housing was being taken away for many citizens in Philadelphia and ten-thousands of families were forced to move from their homes. The relocation of families negatively affected the social ties that were present between their community. Being neighborly is not a characteristic that could be carried into the new community because it was an unfamiliar environment. Individuals no longer felt safe outside within their new communities, however this was only a short-term problem. The advice that is presented in the “Succeed in new situations” article is general information that all college students and business professionals should be reminded of. When it becomes my time to step into the business world, I will have to adapt quickly to the new workforce environment. I currently struggle with stepping outside of my comfort zone and remembering names. These are all things that I will have to adapt to in order to succeed in the new situation. However, with the help of Keith Rollag’s article, I will be able to remind myself that it is up to me to take initiative.     As modifications are made and longtime residents removed the region irreversibly changes into something new, and all of the personality along with its rich antiquity is replaced by frilly boutiques and cookie cutter housing complexes. The area begins to take on a new life, and as this transition takes place the things that made a neighborhood a loving memory quickly becomes a fleeting idea.     Unfortunately, the African Americans migrating to the northern cities were not welcomed initially by those African Americans who were originally from the north. “The newcomers also met with a less than open armed welcome from those blacks who were already established in the North, sometimes for generations.” (Smithsonian, p. 2). The established African Americans believe that they were a part of an equal society but those migrating were the outsiders, increasing the difficulty of adjustment for the migrating African Americans. African Americans traveling from the south did not behave, dress, or talk as those from the north and this difference only hindered the urban community’s togetherness. “Black newspapers and social agencies launched campaigns to educate newcomers on how "respectable" people were expected to behave in northern cities, on and off the job.” (Smithsonian, p. 3).
