Directly following the civil war came a period of reconstruction era where Abraham Lincoln attempted to reunite the northern and southern states. During this time, goals were set for civil equality for blacks by the government. However, the hopes of the freed people were not met. The Reconstruction era that occurred in the United States after the Civil War could have been determined successful or un-successful depending on how you look at the situation. For example, if you look at the Reconstruction Era in terms of slavery and rights, then I argue the said time era was successful. Because the results that followed after the Reconstruction era produced the “Reconstruction” Amendments. The 13th Amendment established the abolishment of slavery in the United States. During the war the Union engaged in total war, attacking civilian, economic, and military targets. Having most of the battles on southern soil, the south suffered greatly. After the Civil War, the United States started a process that would eventually cause more problems than before. Congress tried to come up with compromises and laws that would bring the South back into the Union. This would be called the Reconstruction Period. There were plans like the Ten Percent Plan, Freedmen’s Bureau, and even amendments added to the Constitution. However, as all of these plans were being enforced, hate groups and separation of blacks was also occurring.
