So on a personal level death was an escape. A way out from the reality that neither of them cared to live in. Suicide is a very controversial topic. And after reading this play I learned that the concept of suicide was present even ages ago. Romeo announces immediately before the suicide, “Here’s to my love! (Drinks.) O true apothecary! And if this point is investigated further, you might see that the deaths, including Mercutio's, Romoe's, and Juliet's, at least for the most part, are a result of these characters' own irrational, violent, passionate, uncontrolled emotions.” (Enotes) Tybalt is somewhat of a hothead, but he feels very strongly about the feud. He takes the honor of his family very seriously. So he tries to fight Romeo and Mercutio steps in and tries to defend Romeo’s honor. Mercutio dies technically for Romeo. Then Romeo proceeds to slay Tybalt for the fallen Mercutio out of anger. So here's what it all boils down to. Romeo kills himself because of Juliet and she does the same for him. Mercutio practically sacrifices himself for Romeo. And Tybalt had to die for killing mercutio for interfering in the age old family quarrel.
All in all “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” is a story of love and loss. Throughout the story death is symbolized in a burning wave of passion and compassion.
