Suicide in teens is a rising issue in today’s society; suicide is the intent of taking your own life and it’s a major issue that should be addressed as soon as possible. Even though teen suicide is a major topic in today’s society, it still has a huge impact on today’s adolescence. In the United States, suicide is the eighth cause of death, and also the third cause of death among people aged 15-26. This is a surprising fact because, suicide is 100% preventable. There are numerous misconceptions about suicide in teens. For example, society believes that teens who are suicidal don’t give out warning signs; when someone is deciding on killing themselves, they almost always show signs of being suicidal or depressed. While mental illness is the leading cause of suicide in teens, there are other causes, such as abuse, bullying, anxiety, and depression. In today’s society, bullying is becoming one of the leading causes of suicide in youth, and it isn’t uncommon to turn on the news or read in the paper about a teenager committing suicide as a result of being bullied or teased. Bullying has been a major issue in today’s school system for numerous years, and continues to happen more and more often. A majority of bullying takes place while we are in elementary and high school; it’s not a secret to anyone that kids can be very cruel to one another. “30 percent of students report to being bullied or a bully themselves, and 86 percent of students who commit suicide have reported being bullied to an adult” (ABC News). Sexual identity is another leading cause to teen suicide. “LGBT students are three times as likely as non-LGBT students to say that they do not feel safe at school (22% vs. 7%) and 90% of LGBT students (vs. 62% of non-LGBT teens) have been harassed or assaulted during the past year"
