Summary: A Career As A Marine Biologist

Having a science degree while majoring in coastal and marine science, marine and freshwater biology or any related field is obviously a big key to becoming a Marine Biologist. Having an interest in research and exceptional oral and written communication skills are another key factor to being a Marine Biologist. You must be able to communicate well with companies or animal rescuers who call or contact the company you're representing. Having good written skills comes into play when you must send out letters to beaches to be aware of turtle hatching season and things like that. Another good skill to have would be good observations skills and being able to swim and scuba dive. Having good observations skills is important because you need to be able to identify problems or solutions to the problems you can run into while in the field.
You must also be able to work well independently or as part of a team. Most of the time a Marine Biologist who works in an office generally works alone. However when a marine biologist is sent out into the field he/she will be assigned with a team to help accomplish the job at a much faster pace. A Marine Biologist must also have the physical endurance and stamina to get through long work weeks in the field. Its very hard to go through certain field jobs or even the their day when they are physically and mentally tired and drained. Marine Biologists must be tech friendly with all the different technology used to help make their job easier.
