At the ages of 15, Mary Cummins and Kathy Abell were abducted and forced into a dark life of exploitation and abuse. They worked in anything that would make money, while living in fear never knowing when they would be beaten. “Abell’s nickname was Rocky Raccoon, because her face was always so badly beaten. Once she was beaten for 12 hours, and locked in the house for 4 days” (Coffey). After 20 years, they finally managed to escape and now share their stories with the hope that other human trafficking victims will search for help, too.

The article, “Economics of Human Trafficking,” suggests “poverty, lack of education…domestic violence, corruption, conflicts, and difficulty in acquiring visas, as causes of human trafficking” (Wheaton). People living in poverty often search for job opportunities and a better standard of living elsewhere. Traffickers offering the possibility of moving to another country where they may have better opportunities will appear very appealing. However, human trafficking victims not only have to deal with their traumas, but the misconceptions and limited understanding of the issue impedes their chances of receiving the right treatment. As there is such limited information and awareness on human trafficking, there have not been any long-term population-specific studies conducted. This means that mental practitioners do not know what treatment process will be most effective for the victims, and victims are not processing and recovering from the traumas they have experienced. It is very important that these long-term studies take place, so that these victims are receiving the right care and they can move on from their bad experience. “However, until these studies are conducted and their results made available, mental health practitioners can base treatment options for this population on existing research findings and interventions found to be successful with other similarly victimized populations”
