In each selection, the authors Alvarez, Wong, and Mora all give the same message about immigration. Their message describes how hard immigration is; they also explained that immigration is harder for children. Immigration is moving from one country to another. Families come to the United States to protect their children and themselves from bad things happening in the hometowns.…
In the information text, “on the trail of the Immigrants,” Edward Steiner describes the message of the article by describing the Immigrants journey at the gateway, under the huge portal of the vast hall waiting for their final judgment, said in paragraph 2. Steiner is describing not only their journey, but also the mixed emotions and feelings that are also going on, paragraph 5. Steiner describes their feelings by saying, “already a sifting process has taken place; families have been divided.” When Steiner says, “The sifting process has taken place.” The immigrants are taking that in a mean way, because you can’t sift people, so the attendants are treating…
Americas First Immigrants by Evan Hadingham rejects the widely known idea that the hemispheres first people came from Siberia across a land bridge. Throughout the article he provides evidence that supports his new thesis of the hemispheres first people coming from a sea route from Asia or possibly even Europe. The two biggest questions that arise from his theory is who are these people? And where did they come from?…
According to Erik Gomez, the issue of immigration is complicated due to the fact that America was built on immigrants. Nevertheless, Americans are uncomfortable with the idea of letting people in because of the fear of losing their way of life. In making this comment, Mr. Gomez urges us to be free from bias, change the way of viewing immigration and start to embrace the immigrants who are already in the country, such as marginal groups and ethnical minorities. In other words, Ben Huh, an immigrant from South Korea, believes that politicians do not give an opportunity to people to decide what immigrants should be let in. On the other hand, the reducing of immigration rate is needed to preserve cultural identity.…
Through his essay, "Immigration’s Aftermath" Alejandro Portes portrays the long term effect of the ongoing events of the immigrants getting into America and taking the lob paying jobs.…
In conclusion, I strongly feel that Americans could greatly benefit from adopting some of the immigrant customs discussed in The Immigrant Advantage. Kolker herself could be used as a role model or example for how a family could benefit from some of these traditions, from the money saving habits of the Money Club to the ease of dinner preparation using the Com Thang. I wholeheartedly plan on attempting to make use of available family members whenever it comes time to introducing my child to the world. The knowledge and love that an older family member would be capable of introducing into our home could easily prove invaluable. I also hope that by the time that my children are entering into their college years that I would be able to provide…
To be an American, means to have freedom over one’s own life. In this country of ours we are blessed to be able to express ourselves through freedom of speech without punishment. Because of our constitution, not only do we have the right to express our own individual beliefs with freedom of speech, but we are also able to practice our own religions, bear arms, and enforce the press, letting us receive news about the government itself. This is truly what it means to be an American. To be individual, and live your own life the way you choose…
It was a pleasure to attend the lecture titled “The Economic Contribution of Immigration in America” by Dr. Alfonso Morales. As a Latina I am always happy to attend a lecture that is a part of the Latino Heritage Lecture Series. I strongly believe it is important to learn about different cultures, and these lectures are always very informative. For this lecture, I was especially excited to hear Dr. Morales discuss not only the economic contributions of immigration but also the more culturally inclined aspects of immigration. I found that even though his lecture was titled the “economic contributions of immigration”, he strongly emphasized more life enriching aspects like diversity and culture.…
Being an American is being proud to be a part of a community of people working together for a life full of success and opportunity for themselves and generations to come after them. Being an American means to have passion, enthusiasm, and spirit to live in a free country, this country. having the ability to do whatever you want while being proud, strong and hopeful for a country full of freedom, full of opportunity and full of success, is all what it means to be an American. Being an American is having spirit and patriotism, devoted love, support, and defense of one's country; national loyalty is what it means to be an American.…
What being an American means to me is that I have the rights to do anything. Even though we are able to have all of these rights doesn’t mean we are able to take advantage of them there are still consequences for our actions. All the people in the Navy, Army, Air-force etc have the job to protect us, not everyone who shoots people just because. Being an American to me means being respectful to everyone. Like what Harry S Truman said, “you know that being an American is more than a matter of where your parents came from. It is a belief that all men are created equally and that everyone deserves an even break.” Being an American means to be brave loyal and kind to everyone no matter what. We…
In conclusion, as a first generation immigrant I could protest that the process of immigration is not easy on any individual. We do not move because we have too, honestly nobody would want to leave the people and things they are familiar with and move to another country. However, we do these things in search of a new life, better education, seeking safety or better jobs. Immigration is never easy on the individual no matter how much time goes by, eventually you learn to cope in order to survive. During the process, many people face mental illness, severe depression, anxiety and stress.…
As we are the first generation immigrants, we believe the education is one of the most important elements for the personal life. We were oversea students for the american dream to US. Giving our kid the best education is our top priority. We have overcame the obstales let Aaron study in China for many years. That makes him speaks English and Chinese both as native language. Since Aaron is very interested in exploring the world and love nature, art, history, traveling become our family favor activity. He has been over twenty counties. . From the stark beauty of the ocean to magnificent mountains, those all compelling him to study harder to gain more knowledge in certain…
Small businesses, including immigrant-owned, are an important factor for a progresive country. The United States Small Business Administration (SBA) reported that small businesses create 99% of jobs in the United States (US) (SBA, 2016). Small businesses are a substantial percentage of factors that stimulate the U.S. economy by creating jobs (Artinger & Powell, 2015). Immigrant-owned businesses have grown with the increase of immigrants in the United States and research shows that business ownership offers economic progress for immigrants in the host country (Wang & Liu, 2015). The SBA Office of Advocacy released a study in 2012 indicating immigrants have a higher percentage of business creation than nonimmigrants, an estimated percentage of…
Immigration has always been in existence in the United States since the beginning of American History. At the turn of the 20th century immigration has been an issue for the people in this country. There are many problems that the United States faces and the one that is causing several debates is illegal immigration. Thousands and thousands of illegal immigrants have come from many different places. All of them have different desires. America is supposed to be the land of the free so why is illegal immigration such a big issue in America?…
Part three: The author defines exactly what it means to be an American. According to his definition an American is a European or a descendent of an European. Therefore, America is the only place in the world where a person may have parents and grandparents all from different cultural backgrounds. The author then goes on to say that an American is one who has given up the old for the new and is motivated by hard work and opportunity to improve his…
