Summary Of A Scarlet Ibis By William Armstrong
In the short story, A Scarlet Ibis, William Armstrong, the protagonist, is born with a large head, petite red, shriveled body, and a cruel disability. From the start he has an awfully small chance of life and already has a coffin with his name on it. His brother, only referred to as Brother in the story, states, "...was, from the outset, a disappointment." Although Aunt Nicey believes he will survive, the parents of the child have already given up hope. Brother sadly describes his mother's conversation as William lives to be 3 months old, "But mama, crying, told me that even if William Armstrong lived, he would never do these [normal, active] things with me."
