In the article “At 13, I Didn’t Expect My Teacher to Be Afraid of Me,” Haneen Oriqat writes about her own experience. She says, “I am Muslim, and English is my first language. That didn’t stop students and professors alike from stereotyping me as someone who just landed in this country, with no grasp of the English language. One undergrad professor expressed to me that it was obvious to her that my writing would reveal that I was struggling with being new to this country and the English language. this was before she had read any of my writing” (Oriqat). Oriqat’s teacher thought that her student is not good at writing. She judged Oriqat’s efficiency in writing without reading any essays of hers. Prejudice in this situation could have been cruel and could have had harmful effects on Oriqat’s talent in writing. Oriqat had to prove to her teacher that she is not a new immigrant and that she is talented in writing. Although she challenged, Oriqat did not let that kind of stereotyping make her stop doing what she likes and what she is good at it. We can see the same prejudice scene demonstrated in Zootopia. Nick Wilde, a fox, was thought to be a scary predator. In his childhood, Nick wanted to join the Junior Ranger Scouts. Again, he was stereotyped as being a predator and feared because of it. The bunny's parent asked her to stay with them and not going to Zootopia, but she refused. She was able to go anywhere looking for her dreams to become true. Because f her hard-working, she could achieve her goals. On the other hand, Oriqat's article shows that even if someone judged her about wearing the hijab, she does care.
