In "Basic Christianity", Scott makes the assertion that the main goal in a person's lifetime is to know God on a personal level and be with Him in a personal relationship (95). Scott notes God's determination to save man from their sins. Scott recalls how God started this journey of rescuing man from our sins began in the old testament with Abraham and his descendants from slavery, and "from exile in Babylon" (23). Gods previous rescuing acts in the old testament points to a future event of Him saving us from the "bondage and alienation of sin" (23). The person that God sent to deliver man from sin's chains is Jesus Christ, "Jesus answered them...I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance" (Luke 5:31-32). How God is going to "free us from our self-centeredness", bring man into harmony with others, and fix the broken relationship between man and God is by the death of Jesus Christ on the cross (132). Christ death made everyone a new creation. Mankind "had a new heart, a new nature, and a new birth..."(132). Although mankind was rebirth as a new creation, man can still sin.
