This can be related to Mead and Cooley’s opinions on seeing the self. I would argue that their is a relationship between impression management and body image as it is almost always the aesthetic features that are one’s first impression and therefore body image becomes very important when managing impressions.
This intense focus on body image has led to the creation of the so called “cult of thinness”. This cult has a number of consequences, that negatively affect the daily lives of many women. Women often scrutinize their flaws in mirrors or compare themselves to other females, usually being overly critical. This cult can also result in unhealthy, obsessive behaviours such as extreme food monitoring. There are even examples of women creating so called shrines of the perfect body, further resembling the cult nature.
It is possible to connect the cultural ideal of beauty to self-expression, self-expectations and self-esteem. With regards to self-expression, women often feel as if they can’t be themselves because they are forced to conform to the body standards of society.
