If you focus on these two words, Segregation, meaning setting something or someone apart from everything or everyone else; and discrimination, meaning an unjust treatment of different categories, you can come to see that these two words are not exotic terms. We know them to be very familiar to us due to its many historical appearances. In addition, the rudimentary purpose of the police is fostered by governmental authority with the intention of protecting, and maintaining a sense of security. Therefore the death of black men in the hands of police officers is something that is common today. Coates and others did not have the ability to accommodate themselves and better their safety, because they didn’t own the streets. Consequently, “Jones was murdered by the men who should have been his security guard.” (Coates, pg 90) This sort of fear penetrated the body like it happened to Prince Jones whose body was taken away from him. Furthermore Coates describes a feeling of fear when around the County police because they were in authority, they had plans for how your life was destined to look like and there was nothing you could do about that fixed destination. Coates has a good synopsis about fear and the body, “our world is physical. Learn to play defense, ignore the head and keep your eyes on the body.”(pg 33) Coates explains many times that you could not play defense, because as soon as you tried to people were not only pressing charges but putting your life on the line.
