protect the freedoms of others more than their own rights stating that to do nothing would make them an accomplice.
Michael Bloomberg establishes himself as a credible speaker by iterating the fact that he is a Harvard alumni. To familiarize himself with his audience he talks about his fav eateries on campus and makes fun of his last name being on the Bloomberg Center at Harvard. He also mentions how he served in New York City’s city hall where he served as the 108th Mayor of New York which strengthens his credibility further.
Other strengths in Bloomberg’s speech include his personal connection to his audience, his likable humor, and style of writing, as well as his call to action which concludes his speech.
One could argue that Bloomberg’s criticism of University faculty was too much and was a weakness of his dialogue. Bloomberg seems to have included on fallacies in his speech.
Bloomberg uses a proportional amount of emotional appeal to keep an audience with varying beliefs interested. He references the mosque building protests in our post 9-11 world to make an emotional appeal to the audience, which is a prime example of Aristotle’s pathos reasoning of argument. Bloomberg’s speech has the perfect balance of light-heartedness and thought-provoking depth. His speech does not lack personal emotion which makes it easy for his audience to pay attention.
Bloomberg makes use of polls and statistics in his speech. He references the Federal Election Commission’s 2012 presidential race data which reveals ninety-six percent of campaign contributions from Ivy League faculty members were donated to Barack Obama. He makes use of this last statistic to make a logos appeal by saying that Americans should pause and wonder whether students are getting exposed to a diverse range of political
views. What makes Michael Bloomberg’s commencement speech so enthralling is his well-balanced use of ethos, logos, and pathos. His use of credible sources and his appealing style of writing make his speech keep his audience captivated and entertained. These factors combine to make this commencement address an effective and professional dialogue.
