By origin, she hails from Punjab, India. But she has never been there. Though she understands some Indian words and phrases, she speaks in English always. Bobby said she loves to read books, but does not like English in school. Instead, she prefers numbers and counting. At her leisure she enjoys drawing, colouring and music more than playing outdoors. She is a smart listener for her age and can articulate her thoughts well into developing clear sentences. She listened to all questions carefully, took a few seconds and then responded. When I asked her descriptive questions about her academic subject preferences and Indian cultural associations, she answered with detailed answers as to why she likes maths more than English or what she likes most about Indian dance and music. Results indicated that Bobby was an expert reader for her age and academic level. She correctly recognized the words on the graded word lists all the way up to the next grade. She identified the words so effortlessly that it clearly indicated her outstanding decoding skills and phonemic knowledge. Her word recognition level was very high, perhaps owing to her reading habits from a very young age.
As Bobby's word identification skills were high, she was also very good at reading out passages. Although there were some miscues in her reading and viewing, she achieved over 85% accuracy level in reading out passages from her textbook and from the PowerPoint presentation that I showed her. Her miscues were mostly related to the overuse of the definite article 'the' and the conjunction 'and'. So it was not major.
She was shown some flash words on slides and asked to write them down from memory. She got 8 out of 10 words correct. This not only indicates Bobby's great short-term memory, but also her excellent viewing abilities. Her behaviour during the reading assessment suggested that Bobby was quite at ease with the entire
