Summary Of Broken April By Alan Kadare
Throughout the whole world, everyone has different ways of how they see and deal with criminals and punishment. In the mountain region of Albania specifically, crimes are handled differently than modern society is used to. Gjorg gets involved in the blood feud after Zef Kryeqyqe kills his brother and he makes the hesitant, but brave decision of going after him in order to win back respect and honor for the whole family. This is gets people involved in generation long blood feuds but it is all seen as legal, because of the Kanun. In “Broken April”, Ismail Kadare uses the third person omniscient narrator, the color black and the personification of wild pomegranates to make Gjorg seem not like a criminal, but instead a tragic hero. “Slowly the gun barrel swept over some patches of the half-thawed snow towards the wild pomegranates scattered through the brush covered space on both sides of the road”(Kadare 7). The bountiful fruits were bringing him hope the entire time of his vigil. It reminded him that there is still good that can burst out of the coldness and harshness of life. “He had only a vague animosity for the wild pomegranates and the patches of snow, and sometimes he told himself that were it not for them, he would have given up his vigil long ago But there they were, motionless witnesses that had kept him from going away”(Kadare 8). Gjorg had the pomegranates to basically keep him sane. The fruits almost looked on and Gjorg waited patiently for what seemed like endless hours. It gave him the motivation because he felt as if somebody was actually there so he had more of a reason to do it. The pomegranates also reminded him of his land and its culture. The blooming fruits were a part of the mountainous Albanian terrain that he knew as home. With the Kanun being such a prominent factor in his life style, he knew that killing Zef was what he had to do to do right by the Kanun and what was needed in order to restore respect and honor for his family. By the time Gjorg was back in Brezftoht, the pomegranates were still around him. “The snow had melted, he thought. But the wild pomegranate shrubs were still there. Despite everything, he breathed as if he felt relieved”(Kadare 157). Seeing the wild pomegranates still there brought Gjorg comfort and even relief, which was much needed after the stress and fear he has recently been dealing

In the story “The Man Killed” By Tim O’Brien, the narrator stares in silence at the man he has just murdered. He imagines all sorts of things and describes every part of him, from the blood running out of his wounds to his dainty long fingers. He, then starts telling us about his life and visualizes his past, present and future. The narrator envisions this man of My Khe as a scholar, not a fighter; he believes he is someone who went to war only to fulfill his patriotic duty. During this whole time, O’Brien never really speaks, and the silent is broken by two of O’Brien’s fellow soldiers. First Azar speaks, his apathetic ways are much too cruel, since he compares the soldier to shredded cereal, this also shows he feels pleasure from the man’s death. The second voice is from Kiowa, who in fact sympathizes wit O’Brien but still urges him to move on and tries to make him see that the young soldier’s death was necessary, because if he hadn’t killed him, O’Brien would have been the one…

Love is the emotional investment that pushes people to their limits. This is demonstrated in the film “Pieces of April”, when our protagonist April is pushed to do something for the sake of love, even though she dreaded every moment of it. She tries to prepare a Thanksgiving meal for her and her family with hopes to be reunited after years of negligence. Although she tries to conceal her exhilaration it is clear and obvious that she is eager for her family’s arrival. Her attempt at cooking a meal for her family and going through so much difficulty is not so literal. It represents the notion of how love can push people into doing impetuous things. The deficient love of a girl for her family can make her do so much. The relationship between April and her mother, Joy, resemble the relationship of Tiffany Chan and her mother from the short story "Of Kin and Kind". Both the mother and daughter relationship is very rigid and tense. Tiffany claims that her and her mother may be of the same blood but they are anything but alike, by declaring "We were kin, but less than kind". This quote can also reflect April’s view on her and her mother’s relationship. We all believe that our similarities brings us close and our difference separates us without knowing that the only thing still holding our ties is the love we have for each other. That love is what makes us forget the conflicts and disagreements we may have and reminds us that no matter how different we are, we learn to accept and love each other. Bobby, April’s boyfriend, also illustrates how love can give people unbelievable strength and make them overlook the concept of possible. He claims his mother lifted the car to save his life after they had been in an accident. He carries his belief and shows what a person can accomplish if they carry love within themselves, “When you have love you do things you never thought you could. She had a moment of unbelievable strength because she had love”. The power…

In Arnade and Prevenier’s Honor, Vengeance, and Social Trouble, the petitions from common people reveal the most important concerns and values to society during the late middle ages in the Burgundian Low Countries. In particular, the rationale behind the supplicants’ criminal activities, how the supplicant’s framed their actions in their petitions, and the potential reasons why their petitions were granted are especially revealing. Through the pardon letters, it is evident that society valued honor, wealth, and social order during this period. Through the pardon letters, one can infer that honor was one of the most important values to society because it greatly impacted one’s place in society. One example of one using violence to defend…

When people see the world or aspects of the world and reality, it is usually perceived and taken as the truth. It might seem easier to believe that the world is as it appears but there is more to the world then what is seen through immediate experiences, details that are left out that ensure certainty. This is why within the essay I will be discussing why it is not justified to believe that the world is as it appears. I will bring up this contradiction between appearance and reality using the reading and finding of philosophers such as Descartes, Berkeley, Russell and Plato who have in their own way tried to come to an understanding as to what appearance and reality are and if the world is truly as it appears.…
