Summary Of Brownies By Packer
Typically a story on the topic of race would have rich educated white adults attacking or discriminating against poor uneducated black adults, but “Brownies” offers a different perspective. Packer disregards the usual method for a story of this type. She includes racial stereotypes about appearance and language only to shows how ridiculous they are. She even changes the roles of victim and attacker in order to demonstrate that the people are not that different and that hatred is pointless.
Through her inclusion of stereotypes on appearance, Packer shows how immature they are. Packer uses the stereotype of a white girl having pale skin, but describes it comically in the terms of a little girl to sow how juvenile stereotypes are. Packer also

Not only that, her black characters happened to be white-washed on the front cover of her old edition. In one of our stories for class, Acts of Faith, by Eboo Patel, Patel tells his stories of his countless interactions with bullies growing up. Patel being born in India and of the Muslim faith, growing up in a predominantly white school district, one can only imagine the field-day his interrogators had with him on a regular basis. Racism, stereotyping, and prejudice clearly being a major problem for both Butler and Patel in their lives, but also in the lives of many in the world…

First of all, I will be talking about stereotypes (a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing) and the character I chose is Gracey because when Gracey was told that she could go to Brisbane for state level championship and they have to pay nothing to go there. Also the first day all the white and black kids were celebrating and the next day they were separate and complaining that Gracey goes to Brisbane for free. This quote proves what I mean. ‘‘That blacks get things for nothing that everyone else has to work hard for ‘’ (p20).…

“Brownies” is the tale of a tyrannical dictator that through manipulation, intimidation, and bullying forces her group of foolish followers into almost fighting with a harmless, inculpable group of delayed learners. Through claiming Daphne, the most innocent and respected member of their Brownie Troop, was called a “nigger” by Troop 909, Arnetta ensures the cooperation of the entire group of young girls in fighting against what they depict as a racist, privileged, evil group of white girls. However, the sudden discovery in the bathroom that the girls are “delayed learners” and mentally disabled, quickly reverses the perspectives on the two troops. Previously, Laurel’s Brownie Troop acted like and was depicted as the victims, insulted by the…

When I was younger, my mother signed me up for girl scouts at a very young age. Having my future in mind, she had me experience being a Daisy, a Brownie, and a Junior. Although I had to endure the pain of walking door to door to sell cookies and calendars to strangers when I could have been on the couch watching Power Rangers, being a girl scout certainly had interesting stories to remember for a very long time. However, none of my brownie camping stories can compare to ZZ Packer’s short story “Brownies”. The story is about an African American Brownie troop of six girls who went away to camp to find another Brownie troop was sharing the campgrounds with them. From the beginning of the trip, one of the brownies, Arnetta, discriminated on the other troop, who was white. The story is based around Arnetta claiming she heard a girl from the other troop call her fellow troop member Daphne “a nigger” and she nearly forces the rest of her troop seek revenge. Arnetta certainly has a dominant personality and makes the rules for her troop #909. Although Arnetta may seem drastic throughout the story, she also is the one with the responsibility of holding the troop together, and for a fourth grader, being a leader can add a great deal of pressure and may lead to ridiculous scenarios. From a reader’s perspective of the story, Arnetta is a young girl simply looking for trouble and picking fights, but from my perspective, she is following her gut feelings and taking leadership skills by helping her fellow troop members through times of need, she just didn’t grasp the proper resolution.…

"How date a Browngirl. Blackgirl. Whitegirl or Halfie" is told from the viewpoint of a second person narrator. This story seems to be analysis of how to treat and interact with different girls of different races. The narrator starts off the story by saying ( page 255) "Clear the government cheese from the refrigerator and hide embarrassing family photos." lets the readers know they are embarrassed of their own race. Diaz mentions the terms "insider" and "outsider" to determine what to say and how to say certain things to each ethnicity he also mentions weather if the girl id from around the way or somewhere else determine what restaurants to take her to ( page 256) "If the girl is from around the way take her El Cibao for dinner." "If she not from around the way Wendy's will do." The narrator was stereotyping in a way that girls of one race would expect the same thing from a guy that differs from what girls of another race would want. As the story progresses Diaz is not afraid to speak his mind of what he really feel and thinks. Any man or boy shouldn't be following these rules when it comes to dating all races you should form your own opinion of what you think and how to go about the…

Toward the end of the story, the author appears to admit that racial dissimilarities are part of our life. Having her growing up in Atlanta south side, the author depicts her sensibility toward prejudice through Laurel. Throughout the story, Packer uses sarcasm to attest her feelings toward discrimination. Sarcasm in a sense that the Brownie young girls meant to be innocent but because of their financial hardship and family difficulties prevented them to becoming one. As the truth reveals, Laurel understands about the difficulty of life, empathy, the harshness of racism and her own…

The media generates the notion that dark skin is unattractive. Toni Morrison points out the one of the main reasons why beauty of dark skin is overlooked. African Americans never have opportunity to expose the beauty of their people for the media features only white people. Movies, advertisement, and toys display merely white standard of beauty. Throughout the novel, the writer refers to this subject matter. For example, Claudia, an African American girl receives a blonde doll for her birthday of which she is not very fond. In addition, in movies, mostly white actors or actresses like Jean Harrow and Clark Gable are featured. From all these evidences, we can see that all the representatives of beautiful people in the media are white. No blacks involve. When these happen, blacks have no role-models on the media that would assure the attraction within them. During the 40s where the story takes place, there were black entertainers, but racism impeded their chance to become as successful as white ones. Perhaps by exemplifying the media displaying only white people, Morrison intends to criticize such unfairness. The novel reveals that the black entertainers are not very well-known enough in black communities, so the popular stars, even to the blacks, are white. Consequently, they have no representatives of their heritage in the media to prove that beauty is not all about whites.…

ZZ Packer’s short story, “Brownies,” demonstrates a repeated cycle of inherited racism with a possibility for change presented by Laurel and Daphne’s approach to dealing with racial struggles. The story revolves around a racial conflict between Laurel’s Brownie troop (black girls) and troop 909 (white girls), where a girl from troop 909 allegedly refers to Daphne with a racial insult. The girls have dealt with racism directly through their own experiences and indirectly by their parents past racial conflicts. This causes the girls to stereotype white people, to view them as outsiders, and it also leads to the inadvertent reenacting of their parents racial struggles when confronting troop 909. Packer illustrates a chance for change with Daphne and Laurel’s approach to their parents’ racial conflicts, and there own racial struggles. Through their parents’ passed down racial struggles, and their own encounter with racism, Laurel’s troop builds a misguided foundation on dealing with white people, which can only be broken by exploring other options as individuals.…

She tells the story of a group of young black girls, that after facing constant racial discrimination and humiliation grew up to resent and self-hate their appearance. The white standard of beauty, as the book explains it, is internalized deeply into the lives of black girls, deforming their worthiness as they grow up. Morrison intention with this book is to communicate how the African American women allowed the white beauty standard to dictate and control their life, while looking to encourage African American women to stop letting others value and judge their appearance, so they can start integrating their own standard of beauty into society. That is why though the novel the white standard of beauty is pervasive, only because there is no existent black standard of beauty.…

The setting takes place in the 1940’s where beauty depended on the wealth and physical traits of an individual. During this time period racial discrimination against African-Americans was tremendous. The middle class and the lower class black community were divided. For example; Maureen Peal as considered as the privileged division of the black society. The less privileged were the Macteer’s and the Breedlove’s. Morrison writes, “I am cute! And you ugly! Black and ugly” (73). This quote reveals the importance of how the setting determines whether a person’s beautiful based solely on their skin tone. Being that Maureen Peal’s a light skinned middleclass girl she thinks her lighter skin makes her look more white, beautiful, and more superior over the darker girls.…

Adults, older girls, shops, magazines, newspapers, window signs – all the world had agreed that a blue-eyed, yellow-haired, pink-skinned doll was what every girl child treasured." This quote from the book symbolizes what real "beauty" should look like. White beauty standards take over the lives of black girls and women. Implicit messages that whiteness is superior are everywhere, including the white baby doll given to Claudia, Shirley Temple, the concept that light-skinned Maureen is cuter than the other black girls, the concept of white beauty in movies, and Pauline Breedloves preference for the little white girl she works for over her daughter. Adult women have learned to hate the blackness of their own bodies.…
