Now there is in Jerusalem near the sheep gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. John's reason for not being a holy man (which was a big deal for the time) can be traced to 2 things. 1: Him being a farmer makes his life revolve around the randomness of the weather and the brutality of nature. 2: The corruptness of the religious members of the town. An example is all of the witch accusations that are completely ridiculous and the priest asking the townspeople for money instead of preaching god.…

Throughout John’s quest in the short story, “By the Waters of Babylon” by Stephen Vincent Benet, the consequences of knowledge are reflected by the setting. Set in the future, John’s homeland is disguised to lead the reader to believe the story is in fact, in the past. East of his home, “Dead Places” are considered dangerous and must not be entered unless the character is a priest or the son of a priest. The bones and barren materials of these “Dead Places” keeps the people at bay and stuck in a superstitious state. John, the son of a priest, still feels troubled after traveling there with his father in search of metal.…

John was always open and honest with his words with a no-holds-barred vocabulary, but he would always speak with motivation and try to empower others. Good yet daring people like John are rare to come across. I don’t know any other man who would put others’ lives before their own. John noticed after he was banished that for once in his life he was alone but he wasn’t completely alone. His group to him, sad to say, were seen as somewhat useless and pathetic, he realized he needed to take responsibility and doesn’t abandon them. Hopefully another kind-hearted person like John will come along. One who doesn’t abandon others in times…

The main things that made John change were his curiosity, ideals, and conditioning. These components pushed him throughout the course of the book to change for the worse in the eyes of the civilization. The main points that were shown were about how John is a very important character that changes, but that change may not always be for the better. It is shown because his change causes him to get to the point where he believes that there is only one way out. This shows a grim, but clear message, that some people will not be accepted no matter where they…

This short story also caries a lot of description. The description of the bows and arrow, the action of the priest, the vaqueros, and the Indian described makes the reader want to keep reading. For example the image of the Indian giving his cow to the priest and the priest there after putting the cow in his own corral. The Indian building his own corral for the 100 cows he is expecting. The Indian gathering his 100 cows and placing them in his corral. It is interesting the visual of the priest being angry and the action of the Indian with his bow and quiver. This also follows up to the message interpretation; the priest fought for his cows the same way that the Indian did.…
